Personal Relative Deprivation, Not Subjective Status, Explains Support for Economic Redistribution
Economic inequality is high and associated with negative societal consequences in many countries. Although economic redistribution policies (e.g., higher taxes) can reduce inequality, support is mixed and only moderately explained by political orientation. Prior research suggests subjective socioeconomic status (SES) can help account for redistributive attitudes. We suggest that personal relative deprivation (PRD)—the experience of perceiving an …
Belonging and Social Class at a Religious University: Can Discussions of Religion and Purpose Close the Gap
Sense of belonging is important in higher education. Unfortunately, sense of belonging is not evenly experienced by all college students. Using a theoretical framework based on the Culturally Engaging Campus Environment model, we examine the influence of social class and discussions of religion/spirituality (in class, with faculty, and with peers) on students’ sense of belonging at a religious university in the U.S. South. Regression analyses in …
Secularity in Different Hues: Racial Variation in Sociopolitical Attitudes Among the Nonreligious
Nonreligious individuals have risen to nearly 30 percent of the United States’ population. This notable rise of the “nones” has garnered considerable attention from sociologists of religion and has propelled the study of secular Americans to the forefront of the discipline. However, the study of secularity as its own diverse cultural framework is still limited. Many scholars operate under the implicit assumption that nonreligion carries with it a…
Not Just White and Liberal: Race, Secularity, and Visions of American Society
The following paper investigates the impact of racial differences on societal and political attitudes among secular individuals in the United States. Using data from the 2014 American Mosaic Project, our analyses focus on the relationships between secularity, race, and comfort with conservative Christian and atheist views, as well as opinions on whether the president should be religious. The results indicate substantial variation in these attitud…
Race, Religion, and Belonging at a Christian University
Race plays a significant role in shaping sense of belonging in higher education. However, little research has analyzed religion and belonging at universities. In this study, we test four hypotheses about race, religion, and belonging with survey data from a Christian university in the South. For first-year students, Asians express less belonging than Whites, but no other differences by race or religion appear. Among seniors, Black, Asian, and non…

Theory and Resistance in Education: A Pedagogy for the Opposition
Henry Giroux's latest book, Theory and Resistance in Education, marks a significant moment in the development of a radical theory of education. Giroux advances comprehensive and convincing critiques of the existing structuralist and marxist reproductionist work in the area, while simultaneously combining the best of these theories with his own dialectical approach to produce an important new vector in the field of inquiry. Giroux works within a p…

New French Theory in New German Critique
Rainer N~igele [The Provocation of Lacan in German Critique, No. 16 (Winter, 1979)] has launched a project which could lead to significant advances in the practice of critical theory. He attempts to combine critical theory with what he calls the New French Theory, more specifically, with the deconstructive philosophy of Jacques Derrida and with the structural psychoanalysis of Jacques Lacan. He gives indications of future plans to add the histori…
