  • Populäre Erleuchtung oder: Im Wirkungsfeld von Aufklärung und buddhistischem Modernismus

    Almut-Barbara Renger•ARTICLE•Paragrana•2021

  • Receptions of Greek and Roman Antiquity in East Asia

Almut-Barbara Renger, Xin Fan•BOOK•Receptions of Greek and Roman…•2019

Receptions of Greek and Roman Antiquity in East Asia is an interdisciplinary, collaborative, and global effort to examine the receptions of the Western Classical tradition in a cross-cultural context. The inclusion of modern East Asia in Classical reception studies not only allows scholars in the field to expand the scope of their scholarly inquiries but will also become a vital step toward transcending the meaning of Greco-Roman tradition into a…

  • Pythagorean knowledge from the ancient to the modern world: Askesis, Religion, Science

    Alessandro Stavru, Almut-Barbara Renger•BOOK•Pythagorean knowledge from the…•2016

In both ancient tradition and modern research Pythagoreanism has been understood as a religious sect or as a philosophical and scientific community. Numerous attempts have been made to reconcile these pictures as well as to analyze them separately. The most recent scholarship compartmentalizes different facets of Pythagorean knowledge, but this offers no context for exploring their origins, development, and interdependence. This collection aims t…

  • Tracing the Line of Europa: Migration, Genealogy, and the Power of Holy Origins in Ancient Greek Narrative Knowledge and Cultural Memory

    Almut-Barbara Renger•ARTICLE•History and Anthropology•2014•Cited by: 2•References: 25

This essay explores the place of the mythical heroine Europa in the narrative knowledge and cultural memory of ancient Greece and modern Europe. Early Greek sources make reference to several women named Europa, only one of whom is Agenor's (or Phoenix's) daughter abducted by Zeus who made her the member of a divine lineage. However, during the fifth-century BCE, the diverse "Europa" figures came to be identified with the Phoenician princess; and …

  • No Magic against Love,” or Dark Seduction Redirected: Perspectives on the Fantasy Film Krabat

    Almut-Barbara Renger•ARTICLE•Journal of Religion and Popular…•2013•References: 1

By drawing on material from popular legend and children’s literature, Marco Kreuzpaintner’s film Krabat presents a series of conventional leitmotifs—seduction by dark powers, a pact with the devil and ultimate redemption through love—to explore the tensions implicit in master-disciple relationships common to religious formulations. In depicting how a young boy was compelled to enter under a demonic master’s protection, Krabat exploits the complex…

  • The Emergence of the Master around 1900: Religious Borrowings and Social Theory

    Almut-Barbara Renger•ARTICLE•Journal of Religion in Europe•2012

In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, within a variety of spheres, individual personalities referred to as ‘masters’ were venerated in quasi-religious terms. As a result, treatises relevant to the theme of the ‘master’ were written which had a major impact on subsequent scholarship, particularly in the sociology of knowledge and religion. Inspired by the poet Stefan George and taking his circle as a model, Max Weber, Max Scheler, …

    Almut-Barbara Renger, Alexandra Stellmacher•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für Religions- und…•2010

The strict distinction and separation of mind and body is a particularly modern Western point of view that is routinely also applied to other cultures. Arguing against this dichotomy, the following contribution builds upon research on "implicit knowledge" (Michael Polanyi) and "knowing how" that allow us to view body and mind in their interaction. The focus is on Simeon Stylites the Elder, the most prominent representative of the Syrian ascetic m…
