Xenofeminist Hope and Dread, or How to Move Beyond Patriarchal Technocapitalism
Who said manifestos are dead? Some thirty years after the publication of Donna Haraway's illustrious A Cyborg Manifesto (Haraway 1991), fifty years after Valerie Solanas's angry and delightful SCUM Manifesto (Solanas 1967), and 170 years after Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels's influential Communist Manifesto (Marx and Engels 1848), a new manifesto in town in fact bears traces of all these and then some: The Xenofeminist Manifesto . This manifesto,…
Gender in science and technology. Interdisciplinary approaches
What role does gender play in scientific research and the development of technologies? This book provides methodological expertise, research experiences and empirical findings in the dynamic field of Science and Technology Studies. The authors, coming from computer science, social sciences, or cultural studies of science, discuss how to ask questions about gender and give examples for the application in interdisciplinary research, development and…
The Migrant Metaphor Within Radical Italian Thought
NoBorder activisms and Italian philosophies are highly complicit in the ongoing fortification of the EU and the West, and of the West's subsequent global hegemonic spread through Eurocentric discourses and technologies. I will show that many radical Italian writings, through a metaphorisation of the 'migrant' or 'refugee', supplement the alter-globalisation movement in effectively reproducing the Eurocentric fantasy of the Enlightenment subject a…
Ambiguities of Activism
The Mechanics of the Liberatory Promise
In @ Is for Activism, Joss Hands, a senior lecturer in communications and media studies at Anglia Ruskin University and director of the Anglia Research Centre in Digital Culture, tackles the complex issue of the potentials and pitfalls of current media tools for anticapitalist activists. The book starts off reviewing what some of the more critical theorists of technologies—in particular, Martin Heidegger and Herbert Marcuse—have argued regarding …
Ambiguities of Activism
This volume provides a critical and in-depth investigation of the relationship between alter-globalist thinking and practices and their popular discourses. It examines the ways in which several alter-globalist activist groups (like Indymedia, no-borders campaigns, and forms of climate change activism), as well as left-wing intellectuals and academics (like Michael Hardt, Al Gore, Antonio Negri, Hakim Bey, and Geert Lovink), mobilize problematic d…
Questioning (as) violence
This article seeks to address the contemporary politics and ethics at work in the teaching of ethics in higher education. It will do so by addressing the stakes inherent in the translation of certain ‘urgent reformulations’ of teaching ethics in a contemporary Asian university, in light of a ‘demise of politics’ due to corporatisation. Using Derrida's reading of Levinas’ ideas on ethics, the article claims that the debate on teaching ethics engen…
Singapore
This paper argues that the welcoming by western humanists of pedagogies of critical and creative thinking in Asian universities – as if such thinking will breed an eastern counter‐voice to western neo‐liberalism – is misguided. The paper will question the rise of creative and critical thinking in higher education in Asia by analysing the intersections of the neo‐liberal economy, new media technologies, and such new ‘thinking’ in the post‐colonial…
Activism, Acceleration, and the Humanist Aporia
This article suggests that the humanist aporia, which is productively at work in the Indymedia project, has become a main ingredient of technological acceleration under neoliberalism. The article draws out Indymedia's response and relation to what it will call “speed-elitism” by emancipation and by setting its tensions to work for acceleration as if it were justice. Indymedia therefore is exemplary of the present-day conundrum that humanism finds…
