White Habits, Anti‐Racism, and Philosophy as a Way of Life
This paper examines Pierre Hadot’s philosophy as a way of life in the context of race. I argue that a “way of life” approach to philosophy renders intelligible how antiracist confrontation of racist ideas and institutionalized white complicity is a properly philosophical way of life requiring regulated reflection on habits—particularly, habits of whiteness. The Grand Design
Books on the military history of the Civil War crowd library shelves. Yet as Donald Stoker correctly asserts, most of those volumes deal with individual battles and the men who fought them, not with the overriding strategies that commanders and governments pursued. A professor at the Naval War College Monterey, Stoker has turned to the Civil War to address that imbalance. In The Grand Design, he offers a complex and unapologetically top-down hist…

Plain Folk's Fight
Over the last two decades, studies of the Old South's geographic edges have added immeasurably to what scholars know about the coming of the American Civil War and the character of the ensuing conflict. Mark V. Wetherington's ongoing examination of the longleaf pine belt of Georgia—usually called the “Wiregrass” or the “Piney Woods”—like-wise views events from a fringe of the cotton South and presents conclusions that challenge scholars. Wetherin…
