Cultural Resource Management and Archaeological Research
Cultural resource management studies, which provide archaeological information for planning purposes, are currently burgeoning in American archaeology. A general approach is developed which aims at bringing such studies into conformity with legal requirements and the high standards of modern archaeological research. This approach is founded on the precept that cultural resource management cannot attain its management goals without solid research …
The Cult of the Serpent in the Americas
The origins of ophiolatry in the Western Hemisphere are obscure. It may be part of an extremely ancient, worldwide pattern of veneration of cult animals; it may have arisen independently among the Northeast Asian immigrants to the New World only after they had crossed the Bering-Chukchi land bridge between at least 15,000 and 25,000 to 45,000 years ago; or it may have been affected, if not imported, by serpent- (or dragon-) venerating societies o…
A Demographer's View of Prehistoric Demography [and Comments and Replies]
The direct data on the population of prehistoric man are typically too sparse to be used alone. However, such supports as the population-resources model can easily become distortive prisons rather than aids to analysis, and the most important general point from ethnographic analogy-that contemporary primitives differ widely in their demographic characteristics but in all cases these are affected by a belief in the supernatural-is seldom reflected…
Ceramic Ecology of the Ayacucho Basin, Peru
The paper examines some of the interrelationships of environment and ceramic specialization in the area around the village of Quinua, Department of Ayacucho,Peru. The study reveals that agricultural land dependent on rainfall provides a significant limiting factor in the development of full-time ceramic specialization. Furthermore, the complex series of Quinua ceramic styles depends upon a diverse set of ceramic resources which are mined nearby i…
