  • Lost on a Dark Mountain

    Open Access•Lara Choksey•ARTICLE•Angelaki•2026

This essay reads contemporary fascist performances in Britain, including protests at the Bell Hotel in Epping Forest and the ethnonationalist Woodlander Initiative in Wales, alongside Robert Louis Stevenson’s Travels with a Donkey in the Cévennes (1879). It examines how rural landscapes become sites where political feeling is organised and displaced. It considers the feelings mobilised in these formations and how the call of rural homecoming unse…

  • Strained encounters of the anthropogene

    Open Access•Lara Choksey•ARTICLE•Medical Humanities•2025•References: 7

Calculating biovalue in an age of planetary emergency involves fraught decisions over what and whom should be saved, over the science used to make these decisions, and the biotechnologies used for this partial salvation. Tatsuaki Ishiguro's short story, 'It is with the Deepest Sincerity that I Offer Prayers', dramatises these decisions through a series of strained encounters in a remote species preservation centre between two molecular biologists…

  • Epidemiological plots and the national syndrome

    Open Access•Lara Choksey•ARTICLE•The Sociological Review•2022•References: 17

In this article, I discuss the epidemiological plot, a crisis genre motivated by the idea that the state can be cured through its own processes. This plot is preoccupied with defending the state against viral invasion, moral and medical, and by coercing consensus around what and whom can be included within it. I ex…

    Open Access•Lara Choksey•ARTICLE•Medical Humanities•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 5

This article considers processes of environmental racialisation in the postgenomic era through their politics of difference and poetics of influence. Subfields like epigenetics promise to account for a plurality of possible influences on health outcomes. While this appears to present possibilities for historical reparation to communities whose epigenomes may have been chronically altered by histories of violence and trauma, the prevailing trend h…

  • Political and Planetary Panic

Sana Goyal, Lara Choksey et al.•ARTICLE•Wasafiri•2020

‘Why All the Books About Motherhood?’ asked Lauren Elkin in the Paris Review in the summer of 2018. In her article she notes the emergence of ‘a new crop’, a new canon of books about motherhood (pu

  • Colston falling

On June 7th, 2020, the statue of Edward Colston in Bristol City Centre was pulled down by an anonymous group of Black Lives Matter protestors following a global uprising against police brutality in the wake of George Floyd's murder by Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin. This article combines a first-person account of the build-up to the statue falling and its aftermath with reflections on some of the broader debates, historical and current,…
