Post-diasporic Resilience to Assimilation via the Heritagisation of the Diasporic Legacy among the Descendants of Lithuanian Exiles to Trans-Volga Russia
The Trans-Volga Lithuanian diaspora has for more than 150 years traversed the challenges of assimilation into a majoritarian Russian society. However, in the contemporary era, the third- and fourth-generation descendants’ resilience to assimilation is focused on sensitivity to roots and a valorisation of the diasporic past. The role of agency in diasporic memory, place-making and cultural representations is of key importance. The aim of this pape…
Transnational Culture: From Diasporic Nationalism to Cultural Citizenship
Transnational migration and the politics of multiculturalism, despite all their discrepancies, are making the cultural dimensions more and more important, as the cultural rights of minorities and immigrants are becoming an essential part of citizenship. The article questions transnational cultural practices in relation to citizenship by exploring two waves of the Lithuanian and other East European emigration to the USA of two periods – after the …
Uncertainties of Transnational Belonging: Homeland Nationalism and Cultural Citizenship of Lithuanian Immigrants in the USA
The processes of trasnationalism, especially large-scale migration from Eastern Europe (e.g. Poland, the Baltics, and the Balkans) are visible in the creation of new realities through the representation of cultural differences and distinctive social experiences enacted in diasporas. The aim of this article is to show how social ties and resources are used by migrants to cope with challenges of transnational belonging from grass-roots level unders…
Obituary for Christian Giordano
At the end of last year, the AJEC team received the sad news that Christian Giordano had suddenly died during his Christmas holidays in Vilnius. Christian was one of the founders of AJEC, shaped the journal significantly during its early years as co-editor (1990-2001) and, for a time (1992-1998), publisher. He remained connected with it over the years, regularly acting as peer reviewer and informal advisor during Ullrich's tenure as editor. His f…
This publication is one of the leading journals of European anthropology. While continuing to engage with the classic, founding subjects of the discipline, the journal addresses questions of global current affairs: migration, tourism, sports, humanitarian aid, and sexuality. Its anthropology draws as much on French concepts as on Anglo-Saxon ones

Transnational Chicago: The Local and Translocal Networks and Loyalties of Post-Socialist Lithuanian Immigrants
The processes of post-socialist transformation, especially large-scale migration from Eastern Europe to the Western hemisphere, are creating an 'expansion of space' from the local to the supra-local. This process involves the expansion of personal-, familial- and friendship-based networking practices which acquire significance as transnational mobile livelihoods and as significant dimensions of urban dynamics in global cities like Chicago. What a…
Between "National Tradition" and Human Condition: Politics, Methodology and Epistemology amidst Post-socialist Change
The article explores the disciplinary rivalry between “national ethnology” and sociocultural anthropology in post-socialist Lithuania. I unpack the influence of national identity politics on the research and teaching strategies, methodologies and epistemologies of these two fields. In particular I show how institutional politics has shaped disciplinary practices at two major universities – Vilnius and Vytautas Magnus University - and explore the …
Pagrindinis tikslas – paanalizuoti du lietuviškumo įtvirtinimo atvejus: XX a. 7–9 dešimtmečio etnokultūrinio atgaivinimo judėjimą bei XX a. 5–9 dešimtmečio diasporos (tėvyninį) nacionalizmą. Abiem atvejais tautiškumą siekta įtvirtinti įprasminant nacionalistinį sentimentą ir įveiksminant (etno)kultūrinį bei (etno)nacionalinį identitetą politikose, ku…

Reclaiming European Heritages of Transatlantic Migration
This article provides a fieldwork-based case study for the application of identity empowerment through heritage as a research perspective for the analysis of East European transnationalism seen in Lithuanian immigration in the U.S.A. Two patterns of reclaiming European heritages, 'diasporic' and 'recognitionist', are discussed. The 'diasporic' pattern among more recent migrants embraces a transatlantic heritage in which culture stands for the nat…
Identity Politics and Migration
The Centre of Social Anthropology (CSA) at Vytautas Magnus University (VMU) in Kaunas has coordinated projects on this, including a current project on 'Retention of Lithuanian Identity under Conditions of Europeanisation and Globalisation: Patterns of Lithuanian-ness in Response to Identity Politics in Ireland, Norway, Spain, the UK and the US'. This has been designed as a multidisciplinary project. The actual expressions of identity politics of …
Transnacionalinis identitetas ir paveldas: Lietuviškumas Diasporoje
The aim of the article is to delineate contours of certain social strategies, images and discourses as well as cultural practices related to the Lithuanianness, as culture and heritage imagined, constructed and contested in and among different waves and generations of the Lithuanian Americans. The period, the wave of immigration, the way it happened and in particular the rooted-ness in the American soil are basic markers for a distinct pattern of…
