Stigma in Welfare Programs
Stigma of welfare participation is important for policy and survey design, because it reduces program take-up and increases misreporting. Stigma is also relevant to the literature on social image concerns, yet empirical evidence is scant because stigma is difficult to empirically identify. We use a novel approach to studying stigma by examining the relationship between program participation in a recipient's local network and underreporting progra…
Schooling mobility across three generations in six Latin American countries
This paper presents new evidence on schooling mobility across three generations in six Latin American countries. By combining survey information with national census data, we have constructed a novel dataset that includes 50,000 triads of grandparents, parents, and children born between 1890 and 1990. We estimate five intergenerational mobility measures, finding that multigenerational persistence in our six countries is twice as high as in develo…

Can Small Incentives Have Large Payoffs? Health Impacts of a Cash Transfer Program in Bolivia
We study the effects of a conditional cash transfer for health care utilization, equivalent to 1% of monthly household consumption, on child survival in Bolivia. Using census data and an instrument for program take-up, we show that the intervention increased the survival rates of birth cohorts exposed to the program by 3.8% to 14.7%. A pathways analysis shows higher rates of early antenatal care and skilled birth attendance for women and a higher…
Measuring socioeconomic gaps in nutrition and early child development in Bolivia
These findings highlight the need for targeted public policies that invest in multiple dimensions of child development as early as possible, including health, nutrition and cognitive and verbal stimulation. From a policy perspective, the large socioeconomic gaps in nutrition outcomes documented here reinforce the need to strengthen efforts that tackle the multiple causes of malnutrition for the poorest
The function and credibility of urban slums
Persistence in the Transmission of Education
This paper is one of the first to document multigenerational educational mobility for a Latin American country. It complements a recent wave of articles that study mobility beyond two generations in developed countries. Specifically, we link data on educational attainment for three generations in Chile. Our main findings indicate that grandparental education influences grandchildren's schooling even after taking the parental factor into account. …
