  • Rotting for Red

Open Access•Liis Luhamaa, Riina Rammo et al.•ARTICLE•Heritage•2025•Citada por: 2•Referências: 1

This article sheds light on the historical dyeing traditions of rural inhabitants of the Eastern Baltic region. The 19th- and early 20th-century Estonian archival sources mention that rotted alder buckthorn (Frangula alnus Mill.) bark was used to dye woollen yarn red. The bark was rotted by leaving it outside for weeks or months before dyeing. Although dyeing red with alder buckthorn bark by fermenting it in wood ash lye is well known, the combin…

  • At the Apothecary

    Open Access•M Poulain, Mathijs Speecke et al.•ARTICLE•Medieval Archaeology•2025•Referências: 50

In 1996, a cesspit was uncovered in the backyard of Bruges’ Spanish nation house. The interdisciplinary study of this old rescue excavation sheds new light on life in the city’s international district between the late 14th and early 16th century. The refuse in the cesspit is what is left of several generations of traders, from a well-to-do apothecary, employing alchemical apparatus in the production of pigments, to Spanish traders documented at t…

Open Access•Irina Petroviciu, Emanuela Cernea et al.•ARTICLE•Heritage•2024•Citada por: 1•Referências: 2

The medieval textiles collection of the National Museum of Art of Romania (MNAR) has been in place since 1865 and nowadays preserves about 1000 medieval and pre-modern weavings and embroideries. These extremely valuable objects, dated between the 14th and the 19th centuries, are mainly religious embroidered garments and veils with special significance in the Byzantine li-turgy. Ecclesiastical embroideries of Byzantine tradition are characterized …

Open Access•Saša Kovačević, Marina Van Bos et al.•ARTICLE•Interdisciplinaria Archaeologica…•2023

During the Early Iron Age in Europe (EIA), the phenomenon of the Hallstatt culture enveloped a large portion of the European continent. Between the Atlantic Ocean and the River Danube, cultural groups can be roughly divided into two major regions: the Western and the Eastern Hallstatt circle. EIA finds made from organic material decorated with pigments are usually well-preserved only in specific conditions. A good example is the coloured textile …

  • The Perishable Material Culture of the Pontic Steppe Scythians

Open Access•Marina Daragan, Leonid Leontyev et al.•ARTICLE•Oxford Journal of Archaeology•2022•Citada por: 1•Referências: 12

Using the organic artefacts from the fourth‐century BC grave at Bulhakovo in southern Ukraine, this article discusses the economics of the perishable material culture of the Scythians of the Pontic Steppe region. Thanks to the survival of organic materials (wood, leather, textiles), the burial provides important information about the complex networks of production and exchange that existed in European Scythia. Scientific analyses produced new dat…

  • Cross-Flow Nanofiltration of Contaminated Protein-Containing Material

Open Access•M Boudin, Marco Bonafini et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2017•Citada por: 4•Referências: 54

Radiocarbon ( 14 C) dating of protein-containing material (collagen, hair/wool, silk, leather) contaminated with extraneous carbon (e.g. humic substances) might result in unreliable dates when pretreated with the conventional but inadequate protocols. In this study cross-flow nanofiltration was applied to pretreated, protein-containing material. This method is able to remove low-molecular and high-molecular weight contaminants as demonstrated in …

Open Access•Margarita Gleba, Ina Vanden Berghe et al.•ARTICLE•STAR Science & Technology of…•2016

The first results of textile and dye analyses of cloth remains recovered in Samdzong, Upper Mustang, Nepal, are presented. The site consists of ten shaft tombs, dated between the 400-650 CE, cut into a high cliff face at an elevation of 4000 m asl. The dry climate and high altitude favoured the exceptional preservation of organic materials. One of the objects recovered from the elite Samdzong 5 tomb complex is composed of wool fabrics to which co…

  • Naturally Dyed Wool and Silk and Their Atomic C

Open Access•M Boudin, Marco Bonafini et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2016•Citada por: 3•Referências: 31

Quality control of sample material (e.g. charcoal, collagen) is receiving considerable attention in the effort to obtain more reliable 14 C dates. The atomic carbon to nitrogen (C:N) ratio is a useful indicator of contamination and/or degradation of bone collagen. Wool and silk are also composed of proteinaceous material such as bone collagen, and the C:N ratio may also be a useful quality indicator for archaeological wool and silk. Analyses of m…
