Maya Urban Activities during the Terminal Classic Collapse (AD 760–1000)
During the Terminal Classic period (AD 760–1000), Maya communities underwent a brief and violent political collapse, followed by a protracted period of instability that apparently culminated in an urban collapse as distinct from the earlier, political one. Rather than taking the kingdom or polity as the analytical unit, we propose to study the cities as actors in the collapse using the large and rich Terminal Classic datasets. A comprehensive dat…
Dealing with Uniqueness
This article describes a unique patolli board found in a large residential compound at the Classic period Maya site of Naachtun (Petén, Guatemala) and discusses its implications. While dozens of patolli engraved in stucco floors and benches are known, the example from Naachtun has divisions outlined with sherds inlaid in the fresh mortar. This way of creating the board may provide a fresh perspective on the way the game was played, as it indicate…
The contribution of 3D models to the study of stone monuments in the Maya area
The Maya area is known for its numerous monuments sculpted in limestone, which suffered severe erosion over time. The Mayas used soft limestone, which is sensitive to weathering, to carve iconographic motives and inscriptions on stelae, altars and panels. A systematic program of documentation was developed for monuments considered plain-without reliefs visible to the naked eye. Thanks to photogrammetry and various treatments generated from photog…
An Igluryuaq Unearthed
Across the North American Arctic, Inuit societies constructed a broad array of sophisticated dwellings. One particularly large and complex type known from the Mackenzie Delta region is the cruciform house, a form of semi-subterranean sod house (igluryuaq in the Sallirmiutun Inuvialuktun dialect) with three alcoves extending from its main floor area. Due to a variety of factors, including the scale of excavation required, one has not been fully ex…
