  • Bidi and cigarette smoking and risk of acute myocardial infarction among males in urban India

TANYA RASTOGI, Prabhat Jha et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2005

Death from myocardial infarction (MI) in India is exacerbated by smoking of bidis or cigarettes. Smoking among 309 men with incident MI was compared to 618 age matched controls; 56% of the individuals with MI and 26% of controls were current smokers. Current smokers had a relative risk of 4.7 (95% confidence interval (CI) 3.2 to 6.9) compared to never smokers. Relative risks for smoking more than 10 cigarettes or 10 bidis daily were 9.1 (95% CI 4…

Open Access•Kaumudi J Joshipura, Kaumudi Joshipura et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Internal Medicine•2001

BACKGROUND: Many constituents of fruits and vegetables may reduce the risk for coronary heart disease, but data on the relationship between fruit and vegetable consumption and risk for coronary heart disease are sparse. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association of fruit and vegetable consumption with risk for coronary heart disease. DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. SETTING: The Nurses' Health Study and the Health Professionals' Follow-Up Study. PAR…

  • Short stature and hypertension in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Open Access•Rosely Sichieri, Kamile Santos Siqueira et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2000

Objective Stature is a powerful indicator of poor nutrition early in life in nations where undernutrition is a public health problem. Hypertension in adults has been associated with factors present early in life such as low birth weight. We tested the hypothesis that short stature is associated with hypertension among adults. Design and setting A household survey of representative adults in Rio de Janeiro city, Brazil was carried out in 1996. Sub…

This study aimed to examine prospectively the relationships between social networks and total and cause specific mortality, as well as cardiovascular disease incidence. DESIGN: This was a four year follow up study in an ongoing cohort of men, for whom info…

In the process of converting vegetable oils into solid fats, a process known as partial hydrogenation, some unsaturated bonds are converted to an unnatural trans position. In humans, trans fatty acids increase low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and decrease high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. In addition, positive associations between intake of trans fatty acids and coronary heart disease have been observed in epidemiological studies. The comb…
