  • ‘When things don’t work out, that’s business as usual’: Scientists’ perception of setbacks and failure in experimental research

Open Access•Michelle Giez, Eva Barlösius et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science Information•2026

Although experimental science is renowned for its discoveries, conducting research often involves dealing with problems and setbacks in the research process. Such research endeavors are often marked as failures, even though they have produced new knowledge. This paper explores researchers’ perspectives on these issues, shedding light on how they navigate setbacks in the research process. By conducting participant observation and qualitative inter…

  • Wissenschaftsreflexion: What is it? What is the need for it? Contemporary challenges for studies in science

Open Access•Eva Barlösius, Mike Carrier et al.•ARTICLE•Minerva•2025•References: 11

Academic freedom and societal respect for science have been decreasing in the past years in the wake of growing nationalism, authoritarianism, and fundamentalism. Even in liberal democracies, science has been attacked by anti-science movements. One of the reasons for the weakening credibility of scientific knowledge is its exaggerated use in framing policy questions. Conflicts about interests and values are transformed into controversies about th…

  • Academia’s Expansion—On the Incorporation, Intrusion, and Bridging of Social Fields

    Open Access•Eva Barlösius, Henning Laux•ARTICLE•Minerva•2025•References: 8

This article uses Pierre Bourdieu’s field theory to conduct a relational analysis of the expansion of academia. Drawing on three case studies from the fields of research (open data), higher education (academization of vocational education), and knowledge transfer (real-world labs), we examine the dynamic interactions between the scientific field and its social environment. Our investigation shows that scientific expansion processes can take very …

  • Learning to manage emotions in research: Dealing With Problems and Setbacks

Open Access•Michelle Giez, Eva Barlösius et al.•ARTICLE•Emotions and Society•2025•References: 5

This article explores how laboratory scientists manage their emotions when faced with problems and setbacks in their research process. Specifically, we asked what emotions arise in these situations and wondered how they are dealt with, building on Arlie Hochschild’s work on emotion management and feeling rules. We conducted participant observation in two research groups, one in optical physics and one in biochemistry, followed by interviews with …

  • We Share All Data with Each Other”: Data-Sharing in Peer-to-Peer Relationships

    Open Access•Eva Barlösius•ARTICLE•Minerva•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 2

Although the topic of data-sharing has boomed in the past few years, practices of datasharing have attracted only scant attention within working groups and scientific cooperation (peer-to-peer data-sharing). To understand these practices, the author draws on Max Weber’s concept of social relationship, conceptualizing data-sharing as social action that takes place within a social relationship. The empirical material consists of interviews with 34 …

  • Random grant allocation from the researchers' perspective: Introducing the distinction into legitimate and illegitimate problems in Bourdieu's field theory

    Open Access•Eva Barlösius, A Philipps•ARTICLE•Social Science Information•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 43

Discussions about funding research grants by lottery have centered on weighing the pros and cons of peer review, but this focus does not fully account for how an idea comes across in the field of science to those researchers directly dependent on research funding. Not only do researchers have personal perspectives, but they are also shaped by their experiences and the positions they occupy in the field of science. Applying Bourdieu's field theory…

  • Concepts of Originality in the Natural Science, Medical, and Engineering Disciplines: An Analysis of Research Proposals

    Open Access•Eva Barlösius•ARTICLE•Science Technology & Human Values•2019•Cited by: 2•References: 21

Science is fundamentally devoted to generating original knowledge, and therefore concepts of scientific originality are keys to understanding its very essence. Scientific originality has long been thought of as discovery, but new studies of the humanities and social sciences have shown that other, discipline-specific concepts of originality are used in these fields of study. Does this finding also hold for disciplines in the natural science, medi…

    Open Access•Eva Barlösius, Claudia Neu•ARTICLE•Eastern European Countryside•2009

Failure as a Precondition for Success - the Transformation of East German Agriculture Revisited This paper asks why the transformation of the East German agricultural sector did not occur as politically intended: decollectivisation and a change to small family farms did not take place. In order to answer this question the two dominant sociological concepts of transformation, transfer of institutions and delayed modernisation, are first considered…

Jahrhundert an. Den ersten Jahrgang des „American Journal of Sociology“ eröffnet Albion Small (1895: 1) mit der kühnen These: „Sociology has a foremost place in the thought of modern men.“ Es beginnt, so der programmatische Titel seines Aufsatzes, „The Era of Sociology“.
