  • The Nationality of Utopia

    Open Access•John S Partington•ARTICLE•Utopian Studies•2021

  • Clara Zetkin's 1914 Preface to Edward Bellamy's Looking Backward (1887)

    John S Partington, Bea Klüsener•ARTICLE•Utopian Studies•2016

In 1914 Zetkin was asked by her publisher, J. H. W. Dietz, to prepare a fresh edition of Ein Rückblick aus dem Jahre 2000 auf das Jahr 1887, and in so doing she took the opportunity to add a foreword. The foreword was regularly reprinted in later versions of Bellamy's novel from 1914 to 1980, though it has never appeared in the (pre- or postunification) Federal Republic, and although the German Democratic Republic regularly included it in reprint…

  • Woody Guthrie, American Radical

    John S Partington•ARTICLE•Utopian Studies•2012

In Woody Guthrie, American Radical, Will Kaufman provides an interesting and detailed political biography of Guthrie. His work is a stunning accomplishment and the first sustained monograph on Guthrie's political involvements, opinions, and impacts. Although both Joe Klein's Woody Guthrie: A Biography (1980) and Ed Cray's Ramblin' Man (2004) give proportionate accounts of Guthrie's sociopolitical aspects, Kaufman rightly sees a place for a dedica…

  • The Pen as Sword

    Open Access•John S Partington•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary History•2004•Cited by: 2

Between 1937 and 1945 George Orwell several times used the pen as sword to criticize the later writings of H.G. Wells. An investigation of the nature of Orwell’s criticisms, however, shows that they often appear paradoxical, acknowledging the influence of Wells on the formation of Orwell’s generation (and thus on Orwell himself), whilst condemning Wells for his idealism and lack of understanding of contemporary political reality. This article con…

  • H.G. Wells and the World State

    Open Access•John S Partington•ARTICLE•International Relations•2003•Cited by: 2

H.G. Wells advocated some form of world government from 1901 (with the publication of Anticipations) to his death in 1946, though his contribution to cosmopolitan thought is often overshadowed by the various totalitarian internationalisms of the 1920s to the 1940s. Far from advocating a simple, inflexible formula for the whole world, and far from demanding immediate revolutionary political change, Wells outlined several cosmopolitan models aimed …
