The Construction of Authenticity in the Creative Process
The literature on authenticity of cultural production has systematically examined the perceived authenticity of both the producer and the cultural product but not of the creative process. This study aims to address this lacuna, adopting Carroll and Wheaton’s typology of type and moral authenticity to examine how contemporary dance choreographers construct authenticity during the creation of a new choreography. Our analysis of data from 23 contemp…
Multiple legitimacy narratives and planned organizational change

We view legitimacy work as a cultural practice and interpretive process that takes the form of organizational narratives. We show how the shifting configurations of internal power relations shape both the choice and the meaning attached to the varied legitimacy narratives. We investigate the construction of le…

Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin against the Settlers
This case study considers how a minority stakeholder group of Israeli settlers blocked Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin’s peace initiatives. Drawing on interviews with those who served in Rabin’s administration and with the settlers’ leaders, this article contends that the prime minister’s use of adversarial public rhetoric against the settlers denied the legitimacy of an influential stakeholder group, triggering a backlash of intense militancy from …
Repertoires of Trust
Sociologists and other social scientists have recently renewed their interest in the concept of trust. This article investigates how urban environmental vulnerability to hazards reflects in the perceptions and attitudes of the public in three major cities in Israel: Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, and Haifa. Our central argument is that the differences between the residents’ perceptions and attitudes toward environmental issues are related mostly to the actual hazard levels of their communities, whereas individual differences in socioeconomic char…
The Seam Line
Many Arab communities in Israel’s Galilee region are home to export-oriented textile factories, owned by multinational corporations, whose Jewish managers employ local Arab and Druse women as seamstresses and low-level work supervisors. Based on five years of ethnographic research, this book explores how these managers and workers negotiate the terms and meanings of factory work, integrating work culture with the norms and values of the host town…
Industrial Zones and Arab Industrialization in Israel
Since the 1970s there has been increased integration of the Arab sector into the Israeli economy. This integration has been characterized by the increase in industrial entrepreneurship in the Arab settlements. Critical to the industrialization process are factors related to the availability of industrial zones and the infrastructure which supports industrial production. The main factors are: limited reserves of land for industry; lack of a land m…

Youth Employment Strategies in a Jamaican Sugar-belt Area
This paper examines the socioeconomic impact of youth unemployment, underemployment, and labor underutilization in the sugar belt area of Jamaica up to the mid-1980s. The narrow economic base of the mid-Clarendon plain and the sharply limited employment opportunities experienced there forced youths to adopt a range of survival strategies. Five distinct employment-seeking stages resulted, forming a unique combination of worker traits and the labor…
