  • Sexuality education, condoms and contradictions: The views of educators and students in Ghana

    Open Access•Benedict Ekow Ocran, P Alldred•ARTICLE•Health Education Journal•2025

Background: Condom education campaigns that aim to prevent early and unintended pregnancies can be undermined by local gender norms, religious edicts and ineffective sexuality education policies. In some schools in Ghana, both condom education and abstinence only education run concurrently. Methods: This study explored community attitudes towards condom education in a context of competing messages about sexuality education. The study adopted a qu…

  • A Narrative Review of Ghanaian Policies and Interventions Supporting Young People’s Sexual Agency

Open Access•Benedict Ekow Ocran, Geraldine Brady et al.•ARTICLE•Social Sciences•2025

Adolescence represents a vital transitional phase during which young people actively explore and engage with their sexual identity and expression. However, in Sub-Saharan African contexts, such as Ghana, prevailing socio-cultural norms can inhibit the recognition of young people as sexual beings, thereby restricting their ability to engage with their sexuality. It is essential to examine structural interventions, particularly sexual and reproduct…

  • Tackling Gender-Related Violence: How Can Theory Inform International Professional Education Projects

    Open Access•gigi guizzo, P Alldred•ARTICLE•Social Sciences•2024•References: 8

Is it helpful to share feminist theory with youth practitioners and is there room for it on short training courses such as in EU Action Projects? Can theoretical work on intersectionality, and the concept of gender-related violence (GRV) which grew from it, be shared in training interventions with professionals who work with children and young people? This article is based on the findings of the EU co-funded GAP Work Project that sought to improv…

  • Gender-Related Violence: What Can a Concept Do

    Open Access•P Alldred•ARTICLE•Social Sciences•2023•Cited by: 5•References: 51

This paper explains the logic for using the concept of gender-related violence (GRV) as a broad category that problematises homophobia, transphobia and the policing of gender norms and the gender binary, as well as gender-based violence-understood as primarily violence against women and girls (VAWG). It then evaluates the utility of this concept and its capacity to introduce theoretical refinement to the study of gendered violence, by reviewing i…

  • Applied Research, Diffractive Methodology, and the Research-Assemblage: Challenges and Opportunities

    Open Access•N J Fox, P Alldred•ARTICLE•Sociological Research Online•2023•Cited by: 16•References: 44

This article offers a critical assessment of the challenges for policy- and practice-oriented social research of 'diffractive methodology' (DM): a post-representational approach to data analysis gaining interest among social researchers. Diffractive analyses read data from empirical research alongside other materials - including researchers' perspectives, memories, experiences, and emotions - to provide novel insights on events. While this analyt…

  • Educating Informal Educators

    Open Access•P Alldred, F Howard•ARTICLE•Education Sciences•2022

As Youth and Community Work courses in Higher Education dwindle across the UK, following years of austerity and cuts to Youth Services, the diverse pedagogies of informal education are more needed than ever [...]

  • New Materialism, Micropolitics and the Everyday Production of Gender-Related Violence

    Open Access•N J Fox, P Alldred•ARTICLE•Social Sciences•2022•Cited by: 14•References: 61

This paper assesses how a new materialist ontology can inform the sociological study of gender-related violence (GRV). The new materialisms are relational rather than essentialist; post-anthropocentric as opposed to humanist; and replace dualisms such as agency/structure, reason/emotion and micro/macro with a monist or 'flat' ontology. To make sense of GRV from within this ontology, we explore violence as assemblages of human and non-human matter…

  • Gender-Related Violence in Young People's Lives: UK Practitioners' Concerns and Planned Interventions

    Open Access•Mika Neil Cooper-Levitan, P Alldred•ARTICLE•Social Sciences•2022•Cited by: 3•References: 12

Youth workers are on the front line for supporting children and young people with the violence some of them face. However, education and training for this part of the role seemed lacking in our experience as a Youth and Community Worker and a Youth and Community Work Lecturer in the UK. An international project that sought to address this educational gap for 'youth practitioners' had a UK arm, which is the context for this article. This project c…

  • Bodies, non-human matter and the micropolitical production of sociomaterial dis/advantage

    Open Access•N J Fox, P Alldred•ARTICLE•Journal of Sociology•2022•Cited by: 12•References: 46

This article sets out a more-than-human framework within which to explore the contribution of non-human matter to social inequality. Applying an approach based in Deleuzian ethology, we extend three invitations: to address the multiplicity and fluidity of dis/advantage, to explore its production in everyday interactions, and to acknowledge non-human as well as human matter in the emergence of dis/advantage. The article examines how the interactio…

  • Condoms, Trust and Stealthing: The Meanings Attributed to Unprotected Hetero-Sex

    Open Access•Najiha Alam, P Alldred•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

University students tend to have greater sexual health knowledge than the general public, yet condom use among this group continues to be a public health concern because effective condom use could reduce sexually transmitted infections and, for heterosexual women, unwanted pregnancies. We report findings from a small, qualitative study of condom use among sexually active heterosexual university students in the UK. In interviews, students shared t…

  • Climate change, environmental justice and the unusual capacities of posthumans

    N J Fox, P Alldred•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Rights and the…•2021•References: 1

In this article, we theorize and develop a posthumanist and new materialist approach to sustainable development policy. We trace a humanist and anthropocentric emphasis in policy discussions of ‘sustainable’ development that reaches back almost 50 years, and still underpins recent United Nations (UN) statements. This UN approach has tied policies to counter environmental challenges such as anthropogenic climate change firmly to sustaining and ext…

  • Doing new materialist data analysis: A Spinozo-Deleuzian ethological toolkit

    Open Access•N J Fox, P Alldred•ARTICLE•International Journal of Social…•2021•Cited by: 30•References: 26

With growing social science interest in new materialist and posthuman ontologies, it is timely to explore how these may translate practically into social research methodologies. This task is complicated by differing interpretations of how new materialist precepts should shape research. This paper aims to fill a gap in the literature by setting out a methodology using one specific thread within the new materialisms: Deleuzian ‘ethology’. Inspired …

  • Sexualities

    Open Access•N J Fox, P Alldred•OTHER•The Blackwell Encyclopedia of…•2021•References: 2

Sexuality is one of the most regulated and controversial aspects of human behavior and social organization, and has been subject to societal, religious, and cultural norms, taboos, and laws, often addressing male and female sexualities differently. Sociologically, human sexualities are considered both “natural” and “cultural”; as a consequence, they are diverse, labile, and emergent. Sexualities have been studied from interactionist, poststructur…

  • Economics, the climate change policy-assemblage and the new materialisms: Towards a comprehensive policy

    N J Fox, P Alldred•ARTICLE•Globalizations•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 13

Climate change policy is a contested field, with rival perspectives underpinning radically different policy propositions: from encouraging the market to innovate technical solutions to climate change through to the replacement of a market economy with an eco-socialist model. These differing policy options draw upon a variety of economic concepts and approaches, with significant consequent divergences in their policy recommendations. In this paper…

  • Re-assembling climate change policy: Materialism, posthumanism, and the policy assemblage

    Open Access•N J Fox, P Alldred•ARTICLE•British Journal of Sociology•2020•Cited by: 27•References: 61

National and international policy-makers have addressed threats to environmental sustainability from climate change and other environmental degradation for over 30 years. However, it is questionable whether current policies are socially, politically, economically, and scientifically capable of adequately resolving these threats to the planet and living organisms. In this paper we theorize and develop the concept of a "policy assemblage" from with…

  • Feminist education for university staff responding to disclosures of sexual violence: A critique of the dominant model of staff development

    Open Access•Charlotte Jones, Anne Chappell et al.•ARTICLE•Gender and Education•2019•Cited by: 6•References: 7

Programmes for sexual violence prevention have focussed historically on university, school or college students rather than staff working at these institutions. The Universities Supporting Victims of Sexual Violence project (USVreact), co-funded by the European Commission, worked across universities in Europe to address this gap in the provision and knowledge of programmes aimed at staff. Each institutional partner in the project designed a progra…

  • Sustainability, feminist posthumanism and the unusual capacities of (post)humans

    Open Access•N J Fox, P Alldred•ARTICLE•Environmental Sociology•2019•Cited by: 23•References: 28

Despite the current environmental crises of anthropogenic climate change and environmental degradation afflicting the world, dualisms of culture/nature, human/non-human and animate/inanimate sustain a perspective on ‘the environment’ in which the human and the cultural are privileged over the natural world and other species. Policies on ‘sustainable development’ are likewise predicated upon efforts to assure future human prosperity. Our objective…

  • The Materiality of Memory: Affects, Remembering and Food Decisions

    Open Access•N J Fox, P Alldred•ARTICLE•Cultural Sociology•2019•Cited by: 6•References: 57

Sociology has focused predominantly upon 'collective memories' and their impact on social continuity and change, while relegating individual memories to the status of an empirical data resource for research on experiences and identity construction or maintenance. This article suggests, however, that sociology has overlooked the part individual memories play in social production. It applies a post-anthropocentric, new materialist ontology, in whic…

  • Assembling Citizenship: Sexualities Education, Micropolitics and the Becoming-Citizen

    Open Access•P Alldred, N J Fox•ARTICLE•Sociology•2019•Cited by: 5•References: 71

This article suggests that citizenship should be seen not as a status to be acquired, lost or refused by an individual. Rather it is an emergent and relational capacity produced and reproduced in everyday material interactions, across a spectrum of activities from work to lifestyle practices. We examine one example of such a material interaction: the engagements that young people have with sexualities education. To aid this endeavour, we apply a …

  • Social structures, power and resistance in monist sociology: (New) materialist insights

    Open Access•N J Fox, P Alldred•ARTICLE•Journal of Sociology•2018•Cited by: 43•References: 59

Though mainstream sociological theory has been founded within dualisms such as structure/agency, nature/culture, and mind/matter, a thread within sociology dating back to Spencer and Tarde favoured a monist ontology that cut across such dualistic categories. This thread has been reinvigorated by recent developments in social theory, including the new materialisms, posthumanism and affect theories. Here we assess what a monist or 'flat' ontology m…

  • Mixed methods, materialism and the micropolitics of the research-assemblage

    Open Access•N J Fox, P Alldred•ARTICLE•International Journal of Social…•2017•Cited by: 17•References: 31

We assess the potential for mixing social research methods, based upon a materialist and micropolitical analysis of the research-assemblage and of what individual research techniques and methods do in practice. Applying a DeleuzoGuattarian toolkit of assemblages, affects and capacities, we document what happens when research methods and techniques interact with the events they wish to study. Micropolitically, many of these techniques and methods …

  • Young bodies, power and resistance: A New Materialist Perspective

    Open Access•P Alldred, N J Fox•ARTICLE•Journal of Youth Studies•2017•Cited by: 19•References: 22

Portrayals of young people as either victims or perpetrators of errant, aberrant or even dangerous attitudes, desires or behaviours may be criticised for obscuring the relations of power within which young bodies are socially and physically located. However, notions of ‘resistance’ to power within these critiques remain under-theorised. In this theoretical paper we take a new materialist approach to explore the affectivity of young bodies, and th…

The first book of its kind, Sociology and the New Materialism explores the many and varied applications of new materialism, a key emerging trend in 21st century thought, to the practice of doing sociology. Offering a clear exposition of new materialist theory and using sociological examples throughout to enable the reader to develop a materialist sociological understanding, the book: Outlines the fundamental precepts of new materialism Explores h…

  • The sexuality-assemblages of young men: A new materialist analysis

    Open Access•P Alldred, N J Fox•ARTICLE•Sexualities•2015

This article presents a new materialist exploration of young men and sexuality that shifts the focus away from bodies and individuals, toward the affective flow within assemblages of bodies, things, ideas and social institutions, and the sexual capacities this flow produces. Using data from two empirical studies, we explore the sexuality assemblages of teen boys and young men, and the micropolitics of these assemblages. We find that the sexuality…

  • New materialist social inquiry: Designs, Methods and the Research-Assemblage

    N J Fox, P Alldred•ARTICLE•International Journal of Social…•2014•Cited by: 234•References: 27

This paper discusses issues of research design and methods in new materialist social inquiry, an approach that is attracting increasing interest across the social sciences as an alternative to either realist or constructionist ontologies. New materialism de-privileges human agency, focusing instead upon how assemblages of the animate and inanimate together produce the world, with fundamental implications for social inquiry methodology and methods…

Open Access•Simon Duncan, Rosalind Edwards et al.•ARTICLE•Work Employment and Society•2003•Cited by: 124•References: 18

The male breadwinner model, which dominated both policy assumptions and social ideals in the post-war welfare state, is increasingly being supplanted by an adult worker family model. In this new model, both men and women are assumed to be primarily workers in the labour market, who as fathers and mothers pool their earned income in supporting children. In this article we assess this assumption. First, we examine the gendered moral rationalities o…

  • The Sexuality-Assemblage: Desire, Affect, Anti-Humanism

    Open Access•N J Fox, P Alldred•ARTICLE•The Sociological Review•2013•Cited by: 79•References: 59

Two theoretical moves are required to resist the 'humanist enticements' associated with sexuality. Post-structuralism supplies the first, showing how the social produces culturally specific sexual knowledgeabilities. A second anti-humanist move is then needed to overturn anthropocentric privileging of the human body and subject as the locus of sexuality. In this paper we establish a language and landscape for a Deleuze-inspired anti-humanist soci…

This paper explores social inquiry in terms of the 'research-assemblages' that produce knowledge from events. We use the precepts of new materialism (and specifically DeleuzoGuattarian assemblage ontology) to develop understanding of what happens when social events are researched. From this perspective, research is not at root an enterprise undertaken by human actors, but a machine-like assemblage of things, people, ideas, social collectivities a…

In this new model, both men and women are assumed to be primarily workers in the labour market, who as fathers and mothers pool their earned income in supporting children. In this article we assess this assumption. First, we examine the gendered moral rationalities o…

  • Mothers and child care: Policies, values and theories

    Open Access•Simon Duncan, Rosalind Edwards et al.•ARTICLE•Children & Society•2004

Government expansion of child care services is based on the assumption that both parents are employed (the adult worker model) and make cost‐benefit calculations in choosing child care (the rational economic choice model). This paper addresses this assumption, based on research examining mothers' assessments of appropriate child care. These assessments involve complex moral and emotional decisions around their own and their children's needs, and …

A growing interest in the geographies of schooling has led to an exploration of a variety of school spaces. An increasing number of secondary schools offer internal fixed‐term exclusions so that temporary removal from school is not seen as ‘time off’ for students. This particular strategy has led to the creation of a new type of space in schools. Drawing upon research undertaken in a London secondary school, this paper explores the geography of t…

Do laws regarding violence against or sexual exploitation of young people recognise gendered and other power dynamics? Cross‐national comparison of legal texts can illustrate the benefits of framing issues of violence/gender/youth in certain ways and offer critical reflection on particular legal frameworks or cultural understandings. This policy review is based on an analysis of select laws regarding gender‐related violence ( GRV ) as relates to …

  • Inside the Research-Assemblage: New Materialism and the Micropolitics of Social Inquiry

    Open Access•N J Fox, P Alldred•ARTICLE•Sociological Research Online•2015•Cited by: 25•References: 35
