Using spatial imaginaries to understand contested senses of place and just transitions in decarbonising industrial regions
A novel analytical approach to unpacking multiple senses of place in industrial decarbonisation. • Complex and ambivalent senses of place could exist in industrial towns other than pride in industry. • Divergent place visions between cluster stakeholders and host communities stem from different ontologies of industrial places. • Growing industry-community disconnection strengthens the need to go beyond job impacts for just transitions. The climat…

Placing land and food struggles in agriculture-industry power asymmetry
Land grab scholarship hitherto has seldom discussed about place, while alternative food networks (AFNs) scholars often overlook socio-spatial issues beyond agri-food systems. This paper addresses these gaps with a place-based approach. It examines two land struggles and three AFNs initiatives in Wanbao Village in Taiwan, showing how they co-shaped and protected the community's sense of place from the threat of domestic land grabbing. Moreover, it…
Foregrounding the community
Studies on community energy have generated many useful insights concerning its potentials and challenges in facilitating energy transitions. However, this line of inquiry tends to overlook the crucial significance of site-specific contexts, concerns, and needs beyond the energy system and often generalizes these under a “civil society” umbrella. To study community energy on its own terms, this paper proposes a more grounded approach based on the …
Playful Metaphors in Sex Jokes and Socio-Cultural Implications
This study investigated the interconnected relationship between playful metaphors and sex jokes at the linguistic, conceptual, and discourse levels. Two ontological conceptual metaphors and two specific-level metaphors emerged. They demonstrated that variations in the form of empty metaphors and the creative invention of metaphors are still fundamentally iconic. The conceptual representation of sex acts is closely related to the cultural and ethn…

Understanding ethnic visibility through language use
This study investigates how the ethnic visibility of Taiwan Hakka is improved through language use. The usage of a unique Hakka symbolic code is focused on. Based on data from the four Taiwan major newspapers, an analysis with text techniques shows that the code emerges along with social-political developments in Taiwan, with its meaning turning from negative to positive connotation. Its frequency is highly correlated with major political events …
EFL learners’ awareness of metonymy–metaphor continuum in figurative expressions
Most studies about figurative language learning focus on metaphor rather than metonymy; however, the interactions of metonymy and metaphor are so intricate that the boundary forms not a dichotomy but a continuum. Such a continuum and its influences on figurative language learning have not been studied in depth. The present study investigates EFL (English as a Foreign Language) learners’ responses to different metonymic and metaphoric expressions.…
Understanding and classifying two-part allegorical sayings
Rejected expectations
This article investigates the four uses of the particles cai and jiu in Mandarin Chinese: the temporal, restrictive, conditional, and emphatic uses. The major claim is that the various uses of the particles are related by virtue of their common link to an abstract semantic structure. The analysis not only accounts for the semantic similarities of the different uses but also suggests that it is just the scales on which cai and jiu operate that res…
