  • Sleep well and live well

Open Access•Sunil Sharma, Robert Stansbury et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Rural Health•2025

INTRODUCTION: Sleep is a key component of a healthy lifestyle and the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and prevention recommends that adults get at least 7 hours of sleep each night. Within the United States, West Virginia is among the most sleep-deprived states with 42% of the population reporting insufficient sleep per the CDC. Sleep insufficiency in rural populations is linked to disparities in health and accessibility to health care services.…

  • Subjective well-being mediates the longitudinal effect of insomnia symptoms on internalizing symptoms in community-dwelling older adults

Open Access•Yiwei Ying, Runtang Meng et al.•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•2025•References: 3

This study demonstrates that insomnia symptoms exert a longitudinal influence on subsequent internalizing symptoms, but not the opposite, and subjective well-being operates as a mediating variable. Subjective well-being is identified as a modifiable factor that could be strategically targeted to alleviate the adverse effects of insomnia symptoms on internalizing symptoms in older adults

  • Examining Changes in Sleep Duration Associated with the Onset of the Covid-19 Pandemic

    Salma Batool‐Anwar, Salma Batool-Anwar et al.•ARTICLE•Behavioral Medicine•2021

The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in social isolation and reports of insomnia. However, reports of changes in sleep duration and associated factors are few. To determine the impact of COVID-19 on changes in sleep behavior, data were analyzed from an online survey of adults recruited via social media that included questions asking whether the respondent slept less or more after the onset of the pandemic as well as self-reported sociodemographic a…

  • Associations Between Changes in Daily Behaviors and Self-Reported Feelings of Depression and Anxiety About the Covid-19 Pandemic Among Older Adults

    Open Access•Rebecca Robbins, Matthew D Weaver et al.•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 1

Previous research has shown a connection between the significant and often unavoidable disruptions to daily life due to the COVID-19 pandemic (e.g., sheltering in place) and adverse mental health symptoms. Less attention has been paid to potentially modifiable behaviors, such as sleep and exercise. Our findings highlight the behavioral changes associated with adverse emotional impacts among older adults during the COVID-19 pandemic. Future resear…

  • Longitudinal assessment of daily activity patterns on weight change after involuntary job loss

    Open Access•Patricia L Haynes, Graciela E Silva et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2017

It is hypothesized that: (1) unemployed individuals with less consistent social rhythms and worse sleep will have steeper weight gain trajectories over 18 months than unemployed individuals with stable social rhythms and better sleep; (2) disrupted sleep will mediate the relationship between social rhythm disruption and weight gain; and (3) reemployment will be associated with a reversal in the negative trajectories outlined above. Positive findi…
