This article explores the evolution of the concept of caliphate in Morocco from the 8th to the 17th century, highlighting its usage by diverse local actors and social groups to break free from foreign influence, legitimize their authority, consolidate power, and occasionally pursue imperial aspirations. We argue that this form of universal monarchy paradoxically influenced the territorial, political, and religious development of classical Morocco
The Clerics of Islam: Religious Authority and Political Power in Saudi Arabia
Followers of Muhammad b. ’Abd al-Wahhab, often considered to be Islam’s Martin Luther, shaped the political and religious identity of the Saudi state while also enabling the significant worldwide expansion of Salafist Islam. Studies of the movement he inspired, however, have often been limited by scholars’ insufficient access to key sources within Saudi Arabia. Nabil Mouline was granted rare interviews and admittance to important Saudi archives i…

Désormais, to…
Clerics of Islam: Religious Authority and Political Power in Saudi Arabia
The Committee of Grand Ulama
This chapter describes the creation of the Committee of Grand Ulama, which was the most significant Hanbali-Wahhabi organization that existed. In addition to the committee, the High Council of the Magistracy, and the Ministry of Justice were established by King Emir Faysal. The committee became the headquarters of ideological authority in contemporary Saudi Arabia. This chapter also explores the codification of legal norms deduced from sharia (ta…
The Birth of the Hanbali Tradition
This chapter discusses the beginning of the Hanbali tradition. It reveals how the position of Ahmad ibn Hanbal in the Islamic community became one of the most specifically constitutive elements of Muslim culture. It also describes the most important traits of corporation under the Abbasid Caliphate. It then explores how the tradition adapted to its new sociohistoric environment and how its representatives once again gave voice to an ethic of resp…

Dégage—We’re Filming!’
The Egyptian film industry has gone through dramatic changes since the early 2000s. One tangible consequence of such changes was the production—whether intentional or not—of protest films that expressed opposition to prevailing viewpoints and sought to break the taboo on key sociopolitical issues. Not only do these films serve as historical documents reflecting the state of society, but they also proved to be efficient tools of soft influence and…
Power and Generational Transition in Saudi Arabia
The question of political succession is the Achilles’ heel of the Saudi monarchy. Since its appearance in the 19th-century, the dynasty has more or less successfully endeavored to resolve this problem, which is mainly due to a horizontal mode of transmitting and distributing power inspired by the system of local kinship. The phases of generational transition systematically coincide with periods of crisis in the course of which each lineage attemp…
