  • Scopic Aesthetics in Organic-Residue Microscopy

    Open Access•Policarp Hortolà•ARTICLE•STUDIA ANTIQUA ET ARCHAEOLOGICA•2024

This work offers insights into the intricate interplay between visual art and organic-residue microscopy within the realm of haemotaphonomy. Haemotaphonomy is a microscope-based science that deals with the study of the morphology of blood cells, particularly focusing on erythrocytes. Although recently confocal laser scanning microscopy has been revealed as a possible practical alternative to image bloodstain cells, their shape is better revealed …

  • The underlying emotional background of quaternary palaeontology

    Open Access•Policarp Hortolà•ARTICLE•STUDIA ANTIQUA ET ARCHAEOLOGICA•2020

This short essay aims to provide insight into the emotional background underlying Quaternary palaeontology and encourage scholars to thoroughly discuss the psychological determining factors behind its practice. The nostalgia for past times and the feeling of loss of a world that will never return are the emotional landmark of Quaternary palaeontology. Due to its taste for perished things and nostalgic turn into the past, Quaternary palaeontology …

  • La naturaleza del «conocimiento objetivo»

    Open Access•E Carbonell, Policarp Hortolà•ARTICLE•Arbor•2009

  • Red Blood Cell Haemotaphonomy of Experimental Human Bloodstains on Techno-Prehistoric Lithic Raw Materials

    Open Access•Policarp Hortolà•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•2002•Cited by: 6•References: 6

  • Experimental SEM Determination of Game Mammalian Bloodstains on Stone Tools

    Policarp Hortolà•ARTICLE•Environmental Archaeology•2001•References: 2

The presence of morphologically complete mammalian erythrocytes (red blood cells, RBC) from bloodstains has been previously evidenced in prehistoric implements. While the presence of ancient non-human blood on a prehistoric tool is evidence of the real use of this on an animal resource, the presence of RBC in a smear is evidence of blood. In a simulation of a prehistoric predation human operative chain, mammalian bloodstains on palaeolithic-like …
