The role of skills in teaching reading
Edmund H. Henderson Director, McGuffey Reading Center University of Virginia Charlottesville, Virginia S ome years ago the idea that there were specifiable skills underlying the learned ability to read was universally accepted. Methodologists did differ widely, of course, in their opinion about how and when and in what context such skills should be taught. The validity of the skills themselves, however, was not questioned. Formal reading programs…
Certain Determinants of Academic Expectancies among Southern and Non-Southern Teachers
Academic expectancies of teachers for hypothetical children entering school were investigated among 120 teachers who rated stimulus children on the probability of learning to read in the first grade. Race, class, readiness test scores, activity, and attention of children were varied in a factoral design, with the latter three repeated measures. Background of teacher (Southern or not) was a sixth independent variable. Results showed significant ef…
Self-other orientations of Israeli adolescents reared in kibbutzim and moshavim
Teachers' Judgments of Black and White School Beginners
After six weeks of school, classroom teachers rated 95 Negro and 93 white first-graders on 24 behavioral scales. Mean total ratings did not differentiate the two groups, but the variance was significantly higher for the whites. Total ratings predicted promotion for the Negroes, but not for the whites. For both groups the ratings were (a) higher for the girls, (b) positively related to Otis IQ's and Metropolitan Readiness scores, and (c) among tho…
Decision Processes of Superior, Average and Inferior Readers
Significant relationships were found for fifth graders ( Ns = 40, 80, 100, 97) between reading (IQ controlled) and the acceptance of possible outcomes at the beginning and/or midpoint of a story. Scores were high and increased over time for superior readers, low for average readers, and moderate for inferior readers
A Study of Individualism: Some Demographic and Psychological Correlates
Individualism was measured by offering students a choice between an individual and a group experience. It was assumed that a preponderance of favorable experiences of differentiation within the social field is associated with the development of individualism. Data from questionnaries and group rating scales indicated that family sibling patterns, spatial mobility, race, religion, age and preferences for joining “out” groups were significantly rel…
Opinion Formation and Creativity in Elementary School Children
Significant relationships were found between opinion formation and fluency, flexibility and originality scores from Torrance's Lines Test among 288 children in Grades 2 to 7. Grade in school had a significant effect upon opinion formation, flexibility, originality and elaboration scores, while sex had a significant effect upon fluency and opinion scores
