  • Performing whiteness: Central and Eastern European young people’s experiences of xenophobia and racialisation in the UK post-Brexit

    Open Access•D Sime, N Tyrrell et al.•ARTICLE•New Community•2022•Cited by: 21•References: 37

The state-induced anti-immigration environment and the normalisation of xenophobia in political and media discourses have led to the increased othering of European migrants in the UK through new forms of social stratification, especially since the Brexit Referendum of 2016. For young people who migrated to the UK as children from Central and Eastern Europe, Brexit has represented a major rupture in the process of their identity formation, adding …

  • Gender, spatiality and motherhood: Intergenerational change in Greek-Cypriot migrant families in the UK

    Gina Kallis, Richard Yarwood et al.•ARTICLE•Social & Cultural Geography•2022•Cited by: 4•References: 46

There is growing interest in geography in the intersections of age, family and the lifecourse with migration. This paper furthers this work by focusing on the themes of intergenerational relationships and transmission within migrant families that have three generations. Using a case study of Greek-Cypriot families living in the UK, specifically the paper explores the experiences of second-generation and third-generation women, as young adults and…

    Open Access•N Tyrrell, D Sime et al.•ARTICLE•Population Space and Place•2018•Cited by: 17•References: 15

In this paper, we examine the experiences of young people born in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) who are part of the 1.5 migrant generation living in “Brexit Britain.” We focus on two key themes: (a) young people's feelings of belonging to Britain, their countries of birth and Europe, and the ways in which these have been impacted by the EU Referendum result; (b) young people's future plans, in an intergenerational context, with particular rega…

  • Translocal space across migrant generations: The case of a Greek Orthodox Church in the United Kingdom

Open Access•Gina Kallis, Richard Yarwood et al.•ARTICLE•Population Space and Place•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 27

This paper examines the changing importance of translocal space to three generations of Greek Cypriot migrants in the United Kingdom. Focusing on a Greek Orthodox Church, the paper draws upon participant observations and interviews to examine how translocal space is given meaning by migrants and, in turn, how the meaning and use of translocal space is renegotiated and altered by later generations. Based on this evidence, we argue that translocal …

    C N Laoire, Fina Carpena‐méndez et al.•BOOK•Childhood and Migration in Europe•2016

Childhood and Migration in Europe explores the under-researched and often misunderstood worlds of migrant children and young people, drawing on extensive empirical research with children and young people from diverse migrant backgrounds living in a rapidly changing European society. Through in-depth exploration and analysis of the experiences of children who moved to Ireland in the first decade of the 21st century, it addresses the tendency of m…

  • Family migration decision-making, step-migration and separation: Children's experiences in European migrant worker families

    Magdalena Moskal, N Tyrrell•ARTICLE•Children s Geographies•2015•Cited by: 28•References: 17

Intra-European family migration has extended the realm in which families live and work in Europe. This paper joins a limited number of recent attempts to analyse family migration using a children-in-families approach [Bushin, N. 2009. Researching Family Migration Decision-Making: A Children-in-Families Approach.” Population, Space and Place, 15: 429–443]. In contrast to existing studies on this theme, our focus is on children's migration decision…

  • A good move? Young people's comparisons of rural and urban living in Britain

    Open Access•N Tyrrell, Nichola Harmer•ARTICLE•Childhood•2015•Cited by: 2•References: 40

This article analyses young people's (aged 12-18 years) comparisons of urban and rural living within the context of counterurbanisation in Britain. By exploring the experiences of young people who migrate from urban to rural environments, drawing out gender- and age-based differences when appropriate, we demonstrate that these young people occupy a unique in-between space from which to reflect on their past and current identities, experiences and…

  • Intergenerational heritage language practices: A case study of Spanish-speaking families in Britain

    N Tyrrell, Pedro Guijarro-Fuentes et al.•ARTICLE•Applied Linguistics Review•2014

This paper analyses data from a multiple-method study exploring intergenerational heritage language practices in Spanish-speaking families in Britain. The paper harnesses interdisciplinary perspectives (human geography, childhood studies and socio-linguistics) to explore families' accounts of their intergenerational language practices within the home specifically, due to the dearth of work in this area in Britain. There is an urgent need to exami…

  • Children's Roles in Transnational Migration

    A White, C N Laoire et al.•ARTICLE•New Community•2011•Cited by: 34•References: 38

There are important gaps in our knowledge about children who migrate. Even in societies which employ technologically sophisticated systems for monitoring and measuring migration, data on child migrants are incomplete and focused on specific groups of vulnerable children and young people. The lack of data and research on processes underpinning child migration and on the experiences of children who migrate are rooted in hegemonic Westernised assump…

  • Introduction: Childhood and migration - mobilities, homes and belongings

    Open Access•C N Laoire, Fina Carpena‐méndez et al.•ARTICLE•Childhood•2010•Cited by: 29•References: 18

This article introduces a special issue on childhood and migration. It argues that understandings of the ways in which children form belongings and attachments are enhanced by conducting research with children who migrate or who live mobile and transnational lives. The articles in this collection highlight the mobile and translocal nature of children's lives, from different perspectives and in different global and migration contexts. Taken togeth…
