  • Taking stock of caps on water use

    Open Access•Charles Wight, Brian D Richter et al.•ARTICLE•Water Policy•2025

Balancing water demands with available supplies on a scale that enables sustainable water use constitutes a complex governance challenge. Water managers face the daunting task of balancing water demands amidst variable supplies impacted by climate change and unsustainable extraction leading to drying lakes, depleted rivers, and shrinking aquifers. Traditionally, water managers have focused on bolstering water supplies to meet rising demands. Howe…

  • Envisioning a sustainable agricultural water future across spatial scales

    Open Access•Tara J Troy, L C Bowling et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2023

Sustainable agricultural water systems are critical to ensure prosperous agricultural production, secure water resources, and support healthy ecosystems that sustain livelihoods and well-being. Many growing regions are using water unsustainably, leading to groundwater and streamflow depletion and polluted water bodies. Often, this is driven by global consumer demands, with environmental and social impacts occurring in regions far from where the c…

  • Reducing water scarcity by improving water productivity in the United States

Open Access•Landon Marston, Gambhir Lamsal et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2020

Nearly one-sixth of U.S. river basins are unable to consistently meet societal water demands while also providing sufficient water for the environment. Water scarcity is expected to intensify and spread as populations increase, new water demands emerge, and climate changes. Improving water productivity by meeting realistic benchmarks for all water users could allow U.S. communities to expand economic activity and improve environmental flows. Here…

  • Water scarcity and fish imperilment driven by beef production

  • A scale-based framework to understand the promises, pitfalls and paradoxes of irrigation efficiency to meet major water challenges

    Open Access•Bruce Lankford, Alvar Closas et al.•ARTICLE•Global Environmental Change•2020•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 5

An effective placement of irrigation efficiency in water management will contribute towards meeting the pre-eminent global water challenges of our time such as addressing water scarcity, boosting crop water productivity and reconciling competing water needs between sectors. However, although irrigation efficiency may appear to be a simple measure of performance and imply dramatic positive benefits, it is not straightforward to understand, measure…

  • Water depletion

    Open Access•Kate A Brauman, Brian D Richter et al.•ARTICLE•Elementa Science of the…•2016

We present an improved water-scarcity metric we call water depletion, calculated as the fraction of renewable water consumptively used for human activities. We employ new data from the WaterGAP3 integrated global water resources model to illustrate water depletion for 15,091 watersheds worldwide, constituting 90% of total land area. Our analysis illustrates that moderate water depletion at an annual time scale is better characterized as high depl…

  • Chasing Water

    Open Access•Brian D Richter, Brian Richter•BOOK•Chasing Water•2014

Water scarcity is spreading and intensifying in many regions of the world, with dire consequences for local communities, economies, and freshwater ecosystems. Current approaches tend to rely on policies crafted at the state or national level, which on their own have proved insufficient to arrest water scarcity. To be durable and effective, water plans must be informed by the culture, economics, and varied needs of affected community members. Inte…

  • Global Monthly Water Scarcity

    Open Access•Arjen Y Hoekstra, Mesfin M Mekonnen et al.•ARTICLE•PLoS ONE•2012

Freshwater scarcity is a growing concern, placing considerable importance on the accuracy of indicators used to characterize and map water scarcity worldwide. We improve upon past efforts by using estimates of blue water footprints (consumptive use of ground- and surface water flows) rather than water withdrawals, accounting for the flows needed to sustain critical ecological functions and by considering monthly rather than annual values. We anal…

  • Restoring Environmental Flows by Modifying Dam Operations

    Open Access•Brian D Richter, Gregory A Thomas•ARTICLE•Conservation Ecology•2007•Citada por: 2

The construction of new dams has become one of the most controversial issues in global efforts to alleviate poverty, improve human health, and strengthen regional economies. Unfortunately, this controversy has overshadowed the tremendous opportunity that exists for modifying the operations of existing dams to recover many of the environmental and social benefits of healthy ecosystems that have been compromised by present modes of dam operation. T…
