Structuring Inequality: How Schooling, Housing, and Tax Policies Shaped Metropolitan Development and Education by Tracy L Steffes
Resisting Amnesia: Renewing and Expanding the Study of Suburban Inequality
Suburban inequality is the focus of this double issue of RSF: The Russell Sage Foundation Journal of the Social Sciences . This introduction addresses the limited related scholarship, describes how inequality unfolds differently in suburban communities than in urban and rural communities, and draws attention to urgent issues related to stratification between and within suburban communities. We argue that inattention to the study of suburban space…
Standing on the shoulders of a giant: The legacy of Robert M. Sellers
Robert M. Sellers, PhD, most known for his influential and highly cited Multidimensional Model of Racial Identity (MMRI), is one of the most prolific and foundational Black scholars in psychology. From racial identity theory development and measurement to conceptual and methodological innovations in studying the lived experiences of Black people, Sellers' scholarship centers on the lives of Black communities. Sellers' mentorship and contributions…
Visualizing Variation in Majority-Black Suburbs in the United States
The aim of this visualization is to highlight sociodemographic variation among Black suburbs and spur further research on them. The authors provide a sociodemographic portrait of Black suburbs, defined as those that are more than 50 percent Black, to highlight their prevalence and variety. The 100 largest metropolitan statistical areas in 2018 contained 413 Black suburbs, representing 5 percent of all suburbs. The authors examine distributions of…
Suburban Struggles Muted, During Covid-19
“Understanding the struggles of communities of color in the containment zone of New Rochelle, New York, can help us better understand the far-reaching impacts of the tangle of the pandemics of COVID-19 and state violence.”
Inequality in the Promised Land: Race, Resources, and Suburban Schooling
Black Boys Apart: Racial Uplift and Respectability in All-Male Public Schools
Suburban Black Lives Matter
This article explores the range of experiences and meanings of Black life in suburban space. Drawing from educational, historical, and sociological literatures, I argue that an underconsideration of suburban space has left many portraits of educational inequality incomplete. The article outlines the emergence of American suburbs and the formation of the city suburb divide which governs much framing of educational inequality and why this frame has…
A liberal history of a radical movement
The Making of Black Lives Matters reaches across a number of Black intellectuals and activists to identify common ground that could birth a Black Lives Matter (BLM movement), but its choice of thinkers and Lebron's interpretation fail to produce a radical enough historiography to help readers fully engage with the emergence of the BLM movement. In response to Lebron's text, I take up three central concerns: (1) the audience for the book, (2) whic…
Race and Education
Access to quality education in the United States is unequally distributed along racial and ethnic lines. Since education is a key driver of social mobility, the unequal distribution of high‐quality education means inequality in educational outcomes and future opportunities will likely persist. This entry describes issues pertaining to race and education at primary, secondary, and postsecondary levels, addressing the themes of access, achievement,…
Boyz in the ‘Burbs: Parental Negotiation of Race and Class in Raising Black Males in Suburbia
This paper explores the outlooks of black parents raising sons in a suburban school setting in a town that I call Rolling Acres. Dominant narratives about black males center on urban environments where hazards of violence, failing schools, and socially disorganized neighborhoods are prevalent. However, black parents in suburban settings are not immune to racial hazards when raising black boys. This article engages two domains of distinct concern …
