  • Reexamining the Great Meddler

    Randall Lockwood•ARTICLE•Journal of Animal Ethics•2022

Most previous biographies of Henry Bergh, founder of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the Western hemisphere's first animal protection organization, give little attention to the very mixed reaction his efforts received from the media, legislators, fellow social reformers, the general public, and the large number of enterprises that benefitted from the exploitation and even abuse of animals during America's Gilded Age…

  • All Creatures Safe and Sound

    Randall Lockwood•ARTICLE•Journal of Animal Ethics•2022

The devastation caused in South Florida by Hurricane Andrew in 1992 was the first exposure many disaster responders, government officials, animal protection workers, and the general public had to the issues surrounding animals in disasters. These problems became even clearer in the wake of Hurricane Katrina in August 2005 when many residents of New Orleans left animals behind, many others refused to evacuate if they could not take their companion…

  • In Search of Pedigrees

    Randall Lockwood•ARTICLE•Journal of Animal Ethics•2019

Michael Brandow provides a unique analysis of the rise of the “dog fancy” in the United States and the United Kingdom. He attributes much of the motivation to acquire, breed, and show prestigious pure-bred dogs to a human need for status at the cost of serious detriment to the health and welfare of the many breeds developed to meet these needs. Although the many problems associated with the production of such dogs have been increasingly recognize…

  • Perception of Animals and Cardiovascular Responses During Verbalization With an Animal Present

Erika Friedmann, Barbra Zuck Locker et al.•ARTICLE•Anthrozoös•1993•Cited by: 18•References: 21

The presence of animals has been associated with decreased physiological responses to stressors. Not all individuals respond equally to the presence of friendly animals. The current study was designed to examine whether attitudes toward animals are related to individuals' physiological responses when an animal is present. The relationship of individuals' perceptions of animals to their blood pressure and heart rate responses during verbalization …

  • Validation and Use of the Animal Thematic Apperception Test (Atat)

    Erika Friedmann, Randall Lockwood•ARTICLE•Anthrozoös•1991•Cited by: 9•References: 8

There are several contexts in which it is desirable to know how individuals perceive animals. However, most people describe these feelings with little precision. Several scales are useful for assessing attitudes toward individual animals of people who currently own or have owned pets. These usually include items about the role of the pet in the family, habitual means of interacting with the pet, and so on. The Animal Thematic Apperception Test (A…

  • One‐armed brachiation in gibbons ( Hylobates lar )

    Open Access•Edward F Gibbons, Randall Lockwood•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•1982

The locomotor and postural behavior of Hylobates lar was studied in a seminaturalistic environment at the New York Zoological Park. A particular locomotor pattern, one‐armed brachiation, was observed and filmed. Analysis indicated that the occurrence of one‐armed brachiation as a preferred locomotor pattern was rare and was limited to the carrying of food. The limb and joint movements of one‐armed brachiation closely resembled those of two‐armed …
