Types of Knowledge, Forms of Practice
This study was designed to explore the way that us e of theory influenced a social worker’s conceptualization of a simulated case. The participant in this case study was a woman employed in child welfare, who holds an MSW. She was chosen because her response in a larger study represented a deviant case. Data analysis included both thematic analysis and an analysis of a written report based on ideas taken from institutional ethnography. The author…
Evidence‐Based Practice and the Purpose of Clinical Social Work
The problematic that oriented this study is the response of clinical social workers to the state mandate to use evidence‐based practice (EBP) for Medicaid‐supported clients. The portion of the study that is explored in this article answers the research question, how does the mandate affect the provision of services? Data was collected from three clinical social workers who were identified as "successful" by their peers. The data was analyzed by m…
Teaching Human Behavior and the Social Environment to Enhance Students' Personal Epistemology
Current trends in education practices focus on student's personal epistemologies and their development. Two social work educators took specific steps to attempt to enhance the personal epistemologies of the social work students in their courses in human behavior in the social environment. One instructor repeated the trajectory of the reflective judgment model in her lectures, and the other gave a series of assignments that presented students with…
Notes in Support of a Relational Social Work Perspective
The authors review the literature that calls for the incorporation of relational theory into social work practice. Two strands of relational theory are important to developing a relational social work perspective: the psychoanalytic and the feminist. Based on a feminist understanding of relationality, Dorothy Smith has provided an alternative sociological perspective that can inform social work practice on the macro level, which she has termed in…
Social Work in the US
Social work occurs in a context and, in part, reflects that context. In the present paper, we address the sociohistorical context of social work in the US and attempt to illustrate a correspondence between the current practices of social work and the context of its development. Of particular interest are the concepts of individualism and instrumental reason, and how they became intertwined with politics, social policy, and the practice of social …
Resisting Marginalisation
In the late 1990s the rural community development movement led mostly by educated, professional women emerged in Lithuania. These were loose organizations, typically made up of 5-10 core activists, engaged in mobilizing local communities in dealing with their social, cultural, political and economic problems. It is argued that the rise of the rural community movement represents one of the responses to the post-socialist crisis in agriculture as w…
Changing Typology of Organised Crime in a Post-Socialist Lithuania (the Late 1980s–Early 2000s)
This paper analyzes the dynamics of organised crime in post-socialist Lithuania. Three overlapping periods in evolution of organised crime are discerned. During the mid 1980s organised crime emerged with the attempts to liberalise the state socialism by legalizing cooperative and individual property as a basis for economic activities. By the early 1990s organised crime in Lithuania began to metamorphose from illegal manufacturing to opportunistic…
Work-based Welfare as a Ritual
The paper analyzes the functioning of the newly created labor exchange in post-Soviet Lithuania. It is argued that the labor exchange in post-Soviet Lithuania operates under the conditions of a structural contradiction: welfare services are designed to reintegrate unemployed into the labor force under the conditions of (a) increasing competitiveness of the labor markets and (b) a rapid decline of employment within the Lithuanian economy. As a res…
