Demanding Reduction
Academic literature has placed increased focus on understanding the complexities of human trafficking cases, but a gap in literature persists on assessing structural determinants that may impact the number of identified human trafficking arrests. As such, using administrative data on human trafficking arrests from 2013 to 2017, in the present study we examine the influence that macro-level social disorganization indicators, physical characteristi…
The devil's in the details
Research Summary Mass violence refers to victimization, resulting in multiple deaths and/or injuries. Thus, the measurement of mass violence cannot rest on a single definition or dataset. The purpose of this paper is to decompose mass violence into its various sub‐types, discuss measurement issues related to the sub‐types, evaluate potential datasets for future studies, and offer practical policy implications. Policy Implication Imposing a standa…
Florida’s task force approach to combat human trafficking
Since emerging in the USA during the 1990s, the multi-agency task force has become the preferred organizational structure for enforcing human trafficking laws and providing assistance to victims. These task forces often work across county lines and typically include law enforcement agencies, as well as social service and non-governmental organizations. The effect of collaborations with other types of agencies on law enforcement’s human traffickin…

Rethinking lynching
Contemporary research on the lynching of African Americans in the postbellum South has emphasized its role in maintaining the racial supremacy of Whites over African Americans. We contend that, by itself, this racial domination model of lynching is inadequate to explain variation among lynchings or temporal changes in the characteristics of extralegal executions that occurred during the lynching era, circa 1880–1930. Analyzing a recently compiled…
Food preferences in daily life
Based on prior research showing that a food cognition model employing the evaluative dimensions of pleasure/taste, health and convenience could significantly predict preferences for a representative list of hypothetical meals, the present study demonstrates that the model can effectively predict preferences for recent meals actually consumed. A total of 269 males (N = 122) and females (N = 147), ranging in age from 14 to 83 years, each evaluated …

Gender and Age Differences in Food Cognition
Reasons for eating
Although a great deal is known about what people eat and the demographic and life style factors associated with food habits, relatively little systematic work has been done to investigate why people choose various foods. The present study describes a common‐sense approach to this question. Based on a series of free‐ranging exploratory interviews, a questionnaire that asked persons to rate 35 menu meals and snacks in terms of four scales; pleasure…

The Tenant Labor Market and Lynching in the South
Split labor market theory was originally advanced as a general approach explaining ethnic antagonism as the result of class-based interests. In this investigation, the threat to 'high-priced' (white) labor from 'cheap' (black) labor within the farm tenancy system of the postbellum South is examined as an underlying cause of the lynching of blacks by whites. Supporting this interpretation, the ratio of black to white tenants in southern counties, …
