Socioeconomic status and duration and pattern of sickness absence. A 1-year follow-up study of 2331 hospital employees
The social gradient in sickness absence was different for absences of different duration and patterns. It was strongest for absences of medium length and "abnormal" absence. The social gradient was not explained by other factors

The analyses also showed that above average academic achievement was associated with lower OR of smoking. Teachers and politicians may find this information useful, and allocate resources to give higher priority to a supportive environment in schools especiall…
A Coefficient of Association Between Categorical Variables With Partial or Tentative Ordering of Categories
Goodman and Kruskal’s γ coefficient measuring monotone association and its partial variants are useful for the analysis of multiway contingency tables containing ordinal variables. When the categories of a variable are only partly ordered and the variable is treated as a nominal variable, information in the ordering of the categories and statistical power is lost. The authors suggest a P γ measure that is the maximum of the ordinary γ coefficient…
Differential Item Functioning of a Family Affluence Scale
Happiness and Life Satisfaction in Advanced European Countries
Based on the European Value Survey 1999, this article analyzes happiness and life satisfaction in nine rich, industrialized countries with different levels of perceived happiness. Using graphical modeling, the statistical analysis showed that happiness and life satisfaction are related but are different concepts and that contextual as well as individual variables are important in explaining their variations. One of the most important results is t…
Measurement issues in research on social support and health
STUDY OBJECTIVE--The aims were: (1) to identify methodological problems that may explain the inconsistencies and contradictions in the research evidence on social support and health, and (2) to validate a frequently used measure of social support in order to determine whether or not it could be used in multivariate analyses of population data in research on social support and health. DESIGN AND METHODS--Secondary analysis of data collected in a c…
Sexual behaviour related to psycho-social factors in a population of Danish homosexual and bisexual men
Statistical analysis of complex health and social data
