A study of allophone students at school in majority (France, Montpellier) and minority (Canada, Ontario) contexts
Our research focuses on two contexts of allophone students in school: France (Montpellier) and Canada (Ontario). The objective of this paper, which is a part of a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) research project entitled Towards a renewed intercultural didactic of French as a second language and a better academic achievement of Allophone students: a France-Canada inter-site comparison, is to focus on the discourses and pra…

The Language Diamond
The starting point (1) of our proposal is the observation of the lack of intercultural practices in schools in France, even in the crucial context of teaching French to migrant children (2). Thanks to previous studies, we, therefore, develop theoretical anchors (3) about learning territories, the ways to recycle language, and cultural experiences that can encompass all the context parameters (a pan-language approach) to elaborate an intercultural…

Multilingual tasks as a springboard for transversal practice
Functional Multilingual Learning (FML) aims to leverage pupils’ full language repertoire in a strategic and transversal way across the curriculum in order to enhance access to conceptual understanding and improve skills in the language of schooling. This linguistic-ethnographic study explores the pedagogical decisions of four teachers in a French–speaking primary school in Brussels, Belgium as they create ‘meaningful multilingual tasks’ for their…
‘Yes, but you were born in France’
This case study investigated the practiced language policies of a French elementary school educator, Catherine, as she implemented the French National Cycle of instruction for the early elementary grades with a culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) class of students. The findings revealed that macro-level policies—such as curriculum and teaching practices perpetuated monolingual ideologies and an overall republican goal of integration—limit…

Shifting age of child eating disorder hospitalizations during the Covid‐19 pandemic
BACKGROUND: We studied the effect of the Covid-19 pandemic on child eating disorder hospitalizations in Quebec, Canada. Quebec had one of the strictest lockdown measures targeting young people in North America. METHODS: We analyzed eating disorder hospitalizations in children aged 10-19 years before and during the pandemic. We used interrupted time series regression to assess trends in the monthly number of hospitalizations for anorexia nervosa, …
Pediatric Hospitalizations for Unintentional Cannabis Poisonings and All-Cause Poisonings Associated With Edible Cannabis Product Legalization and Sales in Canada
This cross-sectional study found that following cannabis legalization, provinces that permitted edible cannabis sales experienced much larger increases in hospitalizations for unintentional pediatric poisonings than the province that prohibited cannabis edibles. In provinces with legal edibles, approximately one-third of pediatric hospitalizations for poisonings were due to cannabis. These findings suggest that restricting the sale of legal comme…

Unprepared for Superdiversity
This case study investigated moments of agency and constraint experienced by Catherine, an elementary teacher in a superdiverse classroom ecology in Southern France as she implemented the French National Cycle of instruction for the elementary grades. The findings revealed that a variety of factors constrained her ability to enact effective instruction, including class size, the curriculum, and her training and professional development. Despite t…
Stillbirth in Canada
The archaic definition and registration processes for stillbirth currently prevalent in Canada impede both clinical care and public health. The situation is fraught because of definitional problems related to the inclusion of induced abortions at ≥20 weeks’ gestation as stillbirths: widespread uptake of prenatal diagnosis and induced abortion for serious congenital anomalies has resulted in an artefactual temporal increase in stillbirth rates in …

Neighbourhood socioeconomic status, maternal education and adverse birth outcomes among mothers living near highways
BACKGROUND: Residential proximity to highways is a potential proxy for exposure to traffic-related pollution that has been linked to adverse birth outcomes. We evaluated whether proximity to highway interacts with individual and neighbourhood socioeconomic status (SES) to influence birth outcomes. METHODS: The study population consisted of all live singleton births in Montréal, Canada, from 1997 to 2001 (n = 99,819). Proximity was defined as resi…

Mitigating effect of immigration on the relation between income inequality and mortality
BACKGROUND: The relation between income inequality and mortality in Canada is unclear, and modifying effects of characteristics such as immigration have not been examined. METHODS: Using a cohort of 2 million Canadians followed for mortality from 1991-2001, we calculated HRs and 95% CIs for income inequality of 140 urban areas (Gini coefficient, Atkinson index, coefficient of variation; expressed as continuous variables) and working age (25-64 y)…

Do mother’s education and foreign born status interact to influence birth outcomes? Clarifying the epidemiological paradox and the healthy migrant effect
INTRODUCTION: The unresolved "epidemiological paradox" concerns the association between low socioeconomic status and unexpectedly favourable birth outcomes in foreign born mothers. The "healthy migrant" effect concerns the association between foreign born status per se and birth outcomes. The epidemiological paradox and healthy migrant effect were analysed for newborns in a favourable sociopolitical environment. METHODS: 98,330 live births to mot…
Increasing educational inequality in preterm birth in Québec, Canada, 1981–2006
BACKGROUND: Few studies have evaluated the relationship between preterm birth (PTB) and maternal education over time. We sought to determine whether educational inequalities in PTB have increased in Québec, Canada. METHODS: The authors analysed 2,124,909 singleton live births from 1981 to 2006, and computed the Relative Index of Inequality (RII) and Slope Index of Inequality (SII) with 95% CIs for the relationship between maternal education and e…

Spousal positive social control and men's health behaviors and self-efficacy
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between spousal positive social control (SPSC) and men's health behaviors. This study also tested the mediating effect of health self-efficacy in this relationship and the moderating effects of age and relationship satisfaction (RS) in the association between SPSC and health behaviors and self-efficacy. A total of 506 unionized male workers answered a questionnaire assessing their level of…
Contribution of Maternal Age to Preterm Birth Rates in Denmark and Quebec, 1981–2008
Objectives. We sought evidence to support the hypothesis that advancing maternal age is potentially causing a rise in preterm birth (PTB) rates in high-income countries. Methods. We assessed maternal age-specific trends in PTB using all singleton live births in Denmark (n = 1 674 308) and Quebec (n = 2 291 253) from 1981 to 2008. We decomposed the country-specific contributions of age-specific PTB rates and maternal age distribution to overall PT…

The Association Between Rural‐Urban Continuum, Maternal Education and Adverse Birth Outcomes in Québec, Canada
Context: Rural relative to urban area and low socioeconomic status (SES) are associated with adverse birth outcomes. Whether a graded association of increasing magnitude is present across the urban‐rural continuum, accounting for SES, is unclear. We examined the association between rural‐urban continuum, SES and adverse birth outcomes. Methods: Singleton births from 1999 to 2003 (n = 356,147) were linked to Québec municipalities ranked on a conti…
The joint influence of area income, income inequality, and immigrant density on adverse birth outcomes
The association between area factors and birth outcomes is modified by maternal birthplace and education. Studies have found that race interacts in a similar manner. Public health policies focussed on perinatal health must consider the interaction between individual and area characteristics

Sex, age, deprivation and patterns in life expectancy in Quebec, Canada
Similar to the US, differentials in life expectancy associated with area-level material deprivation increased steadily in Québec from 1989-2004 for males and females of all ages. Differentials were comparable between men and women at advanced ages. Previous research indicating that life expectancy differentials between most and least deprived areas are greater in men may be due to a focus on younger age groups

Influence of social and material individual and area deprivation on suicide mortality among 2.7 million Canadians
Individual disadvantage was associated with suicide mortality, particularly for males. With some exceptions, there was little evidence that area deprivation modified the influence of individual disadvantage on suicide risk. Prevention strategies should primarily focus on individuals who are unemployed or out of the labour force, and have low education or income. Individuals with low income or who are living alone in deprived areas should also be …

The relationship between residential proximity to extremely low frequency power transmission lines and adverse birth outcomes
BACKGROUND: Occupational exposure to electromagnetic fields has been linked to adverse birth outcomes. This study evaluated whether maternal residential proximity to power transmission lines was associated with adverse birth outcomes. METHODS: Live singleton births in the Montréal and Québec census metropolitan areas from 1990 to 2004 were extracted from the Québec birth file (N=707,215). Proximity was defined as residing within 400 m of a transm…
