Humanizing folk devils using ethnography
The sociological concepts of the "moral panic" and the deviant "folk devil" apply to the drug panics in the United States over methamphetamine, heroin, and crack cocaine. Mothers or pregnant women who smoke crack cocaine, and their babies, are assigned exaggerated "demonic" attributes that result in stigma and societal rejection. The primary purpose of this article is to introduce broadly comparative ethnographic studies on the role of psychoactive substance use. Examples are cited from case studies across Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, North, and South America. This article provides an ethnographic sketch of psychoac-tive chemical use within a Hispanic “street corner” and “store-front” society in Brooklyn, New York. Special reference is made to mentally impaired and chemically dependent individuals who attain a “mascot”-like role and an economic niche in small businesses, and to metha-done maintenance clients who attempt to manage information in order to disavow their stigmatized identity
