Slap a Label on It—Civic Registration Categories for (Non)Citizens and the Digital Promise
As we experience a sudden leap forward with machine learning models put into the decision-making apparatus of the state, social scientists are putting scrutiny on what actually goes into these datasets. Issues of ethics and representational harms are relevant questions that come up in the present day. Against this background, there has been little work thus far, bringing together various trajectories about the interplay between forms of contempor…
Covid-19 Point Blank: Language, Migration, and the Pandemic as a Political Issue
The current pandemic is sustained in dichotomies and distancing, as most of us awkwardly have recently experienced. Moreover, COVID-19 has definitely put the spotlight on social inequalities that are underpinning our society and it has highlighted the escalation of the state surveillance capability and new forms of oppression too. The discrimination ingrained in our societies, built on a historically defined regime of racialized oppression and st…
Back to Basics: Stateless Women and Children in Greece
European societies are effectively witnessing a growing refugee crisis in tandem with the ongoing economic crisis in recent years. Within this climate, migration is at risk of being seen more than ever before as an additional ‘burden’ that societies have to ‘carry’ and it is sometimes even questioned why it should be accommodated or respected at all. This paper draws on empirical research from Greece to examine changing European societies, with a…
The rise of the far right in Greece and opposition to ‘othering’, hate speech, and crime by civil and civic organizations
This article focuses on forms of opposition to ‘othering’ and far-right politics in present-day Greece. This opposition takes a variety of forms, comes from a range of actors, and is motivated by a number of concerns with differing assessments of what should be done. More specifically, the article focuses on the far right in Greece and discrimination, hate speech, and hate crime against the ‘other’ from the perspectives of those who are active in…
Economic Crisis and Migration: Visual representations of difference in Greece
This article develops a perspective on African migrant integration, reflecting on the ‘visualization’ of migrant experience. It formulates some considerations on how integration of migrants can be captured, drawing on empirical material from street photography in modern-day Greece. The main research question concerns the role of visual images as sites for the construction and depiction of social difference. In that sense, their meaning goes beyon…
Retracted: The Right to Asylum and EU Asylum Procedure in Greece
Greece, under intense criticism over its asylum management by local NGO actors and European member states, has established a new asylum service, in 2013. In this article we explore the practice and the discourses that occur at the Appeals Authority, an independent authority in the determination of refugee eligibility at second instance, of the newly established Asylum Service in Greece. As members of appeal committees engage with each other and w…
Images of Crisis and Opportunity. A Study of African Migration to Greece
The economic crisis in Greece is becoming a way of life and it is affecting, among other things, the way the Greek society views immigration. Greek people are waking up to the reality that immigrants in the streets of big cities would not go back. The kind of economic state of emergency in need of all sorts of austerity measures the Greek society is entering, shockingly, brings about the fear even in liberal minds that the country cannot provide …
The hierarchy of Greekness: Ethnic and national identity considerations in Greek immigration policy
This article discusses critically recent changes in Greek immigration policy with a special focus on immigrants of Greek ethnic descent. The study briefly presents the ambivalent character of Greek national identity, which is organized around an ethnogenealogical conception of the nation but has been trimmed by civic experience and political challenges over the past century. The interaction between ethnic, civic and policy concerns is also salien…
