Uncertain intimacies: Intoxication, consent, and moral judgment among young adults
How do young adults negotiate consent and responsibility in sexual encounters involving intoxication? Drawing on 31 qualitative interviews with young adults in the Greater Stockholm area, this article conceptualizes such encounters as situations in which taken-for-granted moral orientation may become destabilized. Participants described uncertainty about intentions, consent, responsibility, and the meaning of events, especially where memory loss,…
Deconstructing the Myth of the ‘Naturally Sober’ Woman: Historical and Cultural Constructions of Women and Intoxication
This paper deconstructs the myth of the ‘naturally sober’ woman by tracing its historical and cultural construction in the US across four time periods: colonial, nineteenth century temperance, Prohibition, and post-Prohibition eras. Using a feminist historiographical lens, we explore how gendered narratives obscured women’s complex roles as alcohol consumers, producers, and distributors. Distinctions of class and space were crucial: working-class…
Intoxication, Sexual Consent and Masculine Performances
This paper examines how young heterosexual men negotiated notions of masculinity, manhood and sexual consent in intoxicated sexual encounters. Based on in-depth qualitative interviews with young men in Northern California, US, and drawing on recent developments within theories of masculinity and sexual script theory, the findings discussed here show that many of the men interviewed distanced themselves from sexually predatory behaviors, redefinin…
Turning online to tune in: Psychedelic information seeking in an era of renewed psychedelic curiosity
Background and aimsOnline platforms are popular for exchanging information about psychedelics, including consumption advice. The recent resurgence of public interest in psychedelics will likely intensify this. We aim to further the understanding among researchers, policy makers, medical practitioners, harm reduction practitioners, and social workers, of contemporary psychedelic information exchange and its impact on consumption. With a social lea…
Coping With Intoxicated Masculinity: Queer Young Adults’ Experiences and Narratives of Sexual Victimization and Gender in Nightlife
While research on intoxication and violence has been prolific, including research on sexual violence, little of the existing work has examined sexual victimization among sexual and gender minorities (SGM), especially in drinking settings where violence and aggression may be commonplace. Using data from interviews with 200 SGM young adults in the San Francisco Bay Area, we examine SGM young adults' narratives of sexual victimization within drinkin…
Rethinking intoxicated sexual encounters
Social research on alcohol and sexual encounters has tended to be siloed into several different research endeavors, each addressing separate aspects of wanted and unwanted sexual encounters. While sociologists have focused on the patterns of social interaction, status competition, and emotional hierarchies of sexual encounters, they have left the role of alcohol intoxication largely unexamined. Conversely, the two dominant approaches to sexual en…
Psychedelic discourses: A qualitative study of discussions in a Danish online forum
This study demonstrates the importance of having a nuanced approach to user perceptions. Future drug policy and practice development should take these nuances into account and expect significant variation in the motives and modalities of the use of psychedelics
Ambiguous Encounters: Young Women’s Expectations and Experiences with Intoxicated Sexual Relations in Danish Nightlife
This article is based on 28 in-depth interviews with young women (18–25) about their experiences with intoxicated sexual encounters in Danish nightlife. Little research has examined the role intoxication plays in the processes of consensual and non-consensual sex. Using theories of intoxication and sexual scripts, this article focuses on how alcohol is used and perceived by these young women as a potential way of modifying behaviours and norms in…
Blurring the Line”: Intoxication, Gender, Consent, and Sexual Encounters Among Young Adults
Social concern about sexual practices and sexual consent among young adults has increased significantly in recent years, and intoxication has often played a key role in such debates. While many studies have long suggested that alcohol plays a role in facilitating (casual) sexual encounters, intoxication has largely either been conceptualized as a risk factor, or researchers have focused on the pharmacological effects of alcohol on behaviors assoc…
Subject in the Making: Technologies of the Self and Aspirations for a Good Life in Contemporary Denmark
Coping with crisis is fundamental for human life, but so is the pursuit of everything good and fruitful. We revisit Foucault's technologies of the self as an analytical lens for what people do when pursuing a good life in contemporary Denmark. Comparing three emerging self-improvement domains; psychedelic micro-dosing, meditation and mindfulness, and fitness self-tracking, we explore processes though which individuals become subjects of their own…
Ayahuasca Calling: Sacredness and the Emergence of Shamanic Vocations in Denmark and Peru
This article addresses the sacredness of Ayahuasca from the perspective of the global shamanic vocation. If encounters with Ayahuasca are said to revitalize forms of sacredness in contemporary societies, this is perhaps clearest in cases where individuals understand themselves to be called to lead ceremonies. Recognizing the global scale of Ayahuasca shamanism, we compare facilitators of ceremonies in two societies to discern differences and simi…
