  • The International Mountain Conference, Innsbruck, Austria, September 2019 (IMC2019)

Open Access•Martin F Price, Wolfgang Gurgiser et al.•ARTICLE•Mountain Research and Development•2022

This paper presents a synthesis of the outcomes of sessions and recommendations for future research in mountain areas from the International Mountain Conference (IMC), held in Innsbruck, Austria, in September 2019. The thematic sections of the paper consider: first, the paleosciences, particularly archaeology; second, (bio)physical systems—the climate system, the cryo- and hydrosphere, and the biosphere—and their relationships with human systems;…

  • Variations of the Lewis Glacier, Mount Kenya, 2004–2012

Open Access•Rainer Prinz, Lindsey Nicholson et al.•ARTICLE•Erdkunde•2012

We present a new map of the Lewis Glacier, Mt Kenya (0°9 ’ S, 37°18 ’ E), which was determined with a dif-ferential global positioning system survey and ice thickness measurements from ground penetrating radar that was carried out in 2010. The Lewis Glacier is among the best monitored tropical glaciers and this new map provides a continuation of glaciological monitoring at this site. Glacier area for 2010 is 0.107 ± 0.001 × 106 m which is a 23 % …

  • Communicating Climate Knowledge

Hildegard Diemberger, Kirsten Hastrup et al.•ARTICLE•Current Anthropology•2012•Cited by: 16•References: 30

This forum article is the product of interdisciplinary discussion at a conference on climate histories held in Cambridge, United Kingdom, in early 2011, with the specific aim of building a network around the issue of communicating cultural knowledge of environmental change. The lead articles, by Kirsten Hastrup as an anthropologist and Simon Schaffer as a historian of science, highlight the role of agents and proxies. These are followed by five i…

  • Land-based marginal ice cliffs

Open Access•Michael Winkler, Georg Kaser et al.•ARTICLE•Erdkunde•2010

Land-based ice cliffs are intriguing features at the margins of glaciers around the world, but little is known about mechanisms of their formation and maintenance. A review on those ice cliffs, which are mostly associated with dry calving events, is presented. The focus is on the persistent, rarely-calving ice cliffs on the plateau glaciers of Kibo, the main peak of the Kilimanjaro massif (3°S, 37°E), Tanzania. Areal glacier shrinkage on Africa’s…

  • Is the decline of ice on Kilimanjaro unprecedented in the Holocene

    Open Access•Georg Kaser, Thomas Mölg et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2010•Cited by: 1•References: 2

Glaciers on Kilimanjaro’s highest peak, Kibo, are currently regarded as a persistent feature of the Holocene. Here we synthesize all available measurements, observations, and our understanding of current processes on Kibo — gained from intensive research over the past decade — to formulate an alternative hypothesis about the age of these ice fields. This suggests a shorter, discontinuous history of the tabular-shaped glaciers on Kibo’s plateau, w…

  • Climate change and tropical Andean glaciers

Open Access•Marilène Vuille, Mathias Vuille et al.•ARTICLE•Earth-Science Reviews•2008

  • Some notes on the behaviour of tropical glaciers

    Open Access•Georg Kaser•ARTICLE•Bulletin de l’Institut français…•1995

The fact of a relatively immediate inference of tropical glacier fluctuations on a climate originating from relatively homogenous air masses makes glaciological investigations in the tropics particularly important. One peculiarity of tropical climate is the lack of any appreciable thermal seasonality. Under this general aspect, two characteristic features of the glacier - climate relationship, (a) the sensitivity of the equilibrium line altitude …
