    Open Access•Jae Il Cho, Kyungsun Kim•ARTICLE•SSM - Population Health•2025

Air pollution is an increasing public health concern, with evidence indicating that poor air quality adversely affects health through various pathways. However, its impact on mental health remains underexplored despite indications of pollutant-induced distress. This study examines the causal relationship between air pollution and mental health disorders-such as depression, sleep disorders, ADHD, and OCD-in South Korea. Assessing this relationship…

Exploiting the disaster's quasi-experimental nature, we employ a difference-in-differences (DID) strategy to measure its impact on t…

  • Conscription hurts

    Open Access•Dirk Bethmann, Jae Il Cho•ARTICLE•SSM - Population Health•2023

Almost all South Korean men serve in the country's armed forces for two years. In this paper, we investigate whether the military service affects the health of draftees. Using an event study design, we use the conscription years to identify the effect the military service has on soldiers' physical health as well as on their smoking and drinking behavior. Our results show that the compulsory military service has a strong and long-lasting negative …

After the provincial government faced strong opposition, South Gyeongsang reintroduced the free-school-lunch program the very next year. Using a difference-in-differences design, we exploit these policy changes to…
