Benjamin Barson, Chelsea Burns et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of the American…•2026

  • El disco es cultura

    Open Access•Alex E Chávez•ARTICLE•American Anthropologist•2024•Cited by: 2•References: 49

In music production, a sonic artifact refers to sonic material that is accidental or unwanted, typically the result of the manipulation of sound. This understanding connotes both physical and figurative meanings: artifact as material alteration and as subjectively defined auditory disturbance. Both meanings attune the act of listening to noise-the perception of which relies on normative conceptions of rationality. This article takes up the sonic …

  • Gender, Ethno-Nationalism, and the Anti-Mexicanist Trope

    Alex E Chávez•ARTICLE•Journal of American Folklore•2021•Cited by: 4•References: 47

This article presents the anti-Mexicanist trope as a cornerstone of American ethnonationalism wherein linguistic processes of racialization produce a derided Mexican otherness necessary to the project of white supremacy. Emphasis is placed on the discursive productions of "masculinity" that uniquely undergird this tropic construction's past and present forms. In view of its pervasiveness in the contemporary American political landscape, the autho…

Durham: Duke University Press, 2019. 144 pp. In a recent radio interview on the topic of his book of poetry, The Chasers, Renato Rosaldo remarked, "There is a subtext in this text. • Presentness

    Alex E Chávez•ARTICLE•Kalfou A Journal of Comparative…•2019

Typically, the structures of consciousness in how we experience time—or the broader phenomenological question of temporality—divide said experience into past, present, and future. These distinctions are not self-evident; rather, they are shaped by politics, institutions, society, economy, and so forth. Indeed, in his expressed engagement with historical materialism, Walter Benjamin claims that history—as one such structuring of temporality—is nei…

  • Sounds of Crossing

    Alex E Chávez•BOOK•Sounds of Crossing•2017

In Sounds of Crossing Alex E. Chávez explores the contemporary politics of Mexican migrant cultural expression manifest in the sounds and poetics of huapango arribeño, a musical genre originating from north-central Mexico. Following the resonance of huapango's improvisational performance within the lives of audiences, musicians, and himself—from New Year's festivities in the highlands of Guanajuato, Mexico, to backyard get-togethers along the bac…

  • So ¿te fuiste a Dallas? (So you went to Dallas?/So you got screwed)

    Open Access•Alex E Chávez•ARTICLE•Journal of Linguistic Anthropology•2015•Cited by: 13•References: 43

Drawing on recent work on the linguistic production of social markedness, this article explores the cross-border usage of what I term the "Dallas" chronotope: a form of poetics that critically frames the political-economic logics that undergird the markedness structure central to the time-space relational construction of migrant illegality. In a community where back-and-forth movements between Mexico and the United States result in varying degree…

  • Huapango Arribeño

    Alex E Chávez•ARTICLE•Latin American Music Review•2012•Cited by: 2•References: 20

Attending to the complex social circumstances that shape vernacular expressive forms over time entails careful consideration of tradition as an embodied aesthetic practice that is maintained as a situated space of quotidian expression while also actuating a cardinal momentum capable of mapping the most present vicissitudes of everyday life. With this in mind, this article ethnographically renders the transformations and circulations of Mexican hu…
