    Mary Patrice Erdmans•ARTICLE•Polish American Studies•2026

What we overlook in these economic rational actor models is an understanding of how migration decisions are embedded in social relationships. One contemporary migrant, Anna Maksymiuk Kieturakis, who was p…

I explore the meaning of Jewishness in his social self, constructed and narrated within the changing sociopolitical and geographic contexts of Wrocław, New York, Mississippi, and Warsaw

  • Polish Mother

    Mary Patrice Erdmans•ARTICLE•Polish American Studies•2023

The self-publishing book market exploded in the twenty-first century, and by 2020 roughly 1.7 million books were self-published in the US.1 What value do these books hold for scholars? As an editor, I often hesitate (or refuse) to review them, and when I do, I tend to review with the same critical eye that I use for academic books, meaning I focus on such things as quality of sources and documentation, verisimilitude, contributions to the literat…

  • On Becoming a Teen Mom: Life before Pregnancy

Mary Patrice Erdmans, Timothy Black•BOOK•On Becoming a Teen Mom•2015

In 2013, New York City launched a public education campaign with posters of frowning or crying children saying such things as "I’m twice as likely not to graduate high school because you had me as a teen" and "Honestly, Mom, chances are he won’t stay with you." Campaigns like this support a public narrative that portrays teen mothers as threatening the moral order, bankrupting state coffers, and causing high rates of poverty, incarceration, and s…

Immigration is both an historical and contemporary phenomenon in the United States. As a result, various ancestral generations coexist. For example, third generation Polish American ethnics share social space with recent Polish immigrants in Chicago. While common ancestry leads immigrants and ethnics to think they ought to work together, dissimilarities between the groups lead to conflict. Two sources of conflict are identified.
