Recalling Sexual Partners: The Accuracy of Self-Reports
Accuracy of recall of the number of sexual partners individuals had over a period of one month, three months, six months and one year was studied in a group of 285 young, single, heterosexual adults. Self-reports of the number of partners were obtained on a weekly basis and then compared with recall of behavior over longer time periods that overlapped the weekly measures. For individuals who claimed abstinence or who claimed to be monogamous, acc…
A Three‐Factor Model of Trait Anger: Dimensions of Affect, Behavior, and Cognition
The structure of trait anger was tested in a study of 24 self‐report scales. Exploratory factor analyses in an undergraduate sample ( N = 457) yielded a two‐factor model (comprising cynicism and aggression) and a three‐factor model (representing angry emotions, aggressive behaviors, and cynicism). Subsequent evaluations, including confirmatory factor analyses, indicated that the three‐factor model provided the best characterization of the trait a…
The Contraceptive Self-Efficacy Scale: Analysis in Four Samples
Lisrel Approaches to Interaction Effects in Multiple Regression
The Relationship between Social Support and Life Satisfaction as a Function of Family Structure
The present study focuses on the discriminant validity of 4 types of social support and the utility of distinguishing support provision from different referents. Hypotheses about the influence of family structure on the relationship between social support and life satisfaction were formally evaluated. The respondents were 512 parents, including 176 married mothers, 172 married fathers, and 164 single mothers. Results corroborate the importance of…
Safer sex intentions and condom use viewed from a health belief, reasoned action, and social cognitive perspective
We conducted three studies and used structural equation modeling to examine how well the health belief model, the theory of reasoned action, and social cognitive theory are capable of explaining heterosexual persons’ sexual risk taking. Study 1 was conducted with sexually active young adults (college students) who completed an anonymous questionnaire about their sexual behavior and concepts pertaining to the three models. The analyses identified …
Measurement error in the analysis of interaction effects between continuous predictors using multiple regression: Multiple indicator and structural equation approaches
The Detection and Interpretation of Interaction Effects Between Continuous Variables in Multiple Regression
issues in the detection and interpretation of interaction effects between quantitative variables in multiple regression analysis are discussed. Recent articles by Cronbach (1987) and Dunlap and Kemery (1987) suggested the use of two transformations to reduce "problems" of multicollinearity. These transformations are discussed in the context of the conditional nature of multiple regression with product terms. It is argued that although additive tr…
The relation between Type A behavior and chronic emotional distress: A meta-analysis
A meta-analysis was conducted of studies examining the relation between Type A behavior and chronic emotional distress as measured by standard psychological scales. Aggregating across all studies, the average effect size was .27, indicating a positive association between Type A and chronic dysphoria; however, there was considerable variability in the size of the relation among studies. Partitioning by Type A measure revealed that Structured Inter…
Cross-Cultural Methods for the Study of Behavioral Decision Making
A framework for studying behavioral decision making in cross-cultural contexts is described. The approach is based upon a combined etic-emic methodology and circumvents scaling problems that have plagued past applications of decision theory in different cultures. The approach was applied empirically to career decisions of college students in the United States and Hong Kong. Overall, the data were supportive of the framework
