  • Conjured from Fragments: KMD's Mr. Hood and the Transformative Poetics of the Golden Age Rap Album

Open Access•James Mcnally, James G McNally•ARTICLE•Journal of the Society for…•2021

Between 1988 and 1991, the rap album took flight. Under the dual impetus of innovations in sampling, and of the album form itself, an explosion of youthful creativity ensured the rap album, mined for more self-consciously artistic potential, emerged as a multi-layered artform that revealed a similarly multi-layered Black genius. For innovators like the Bomb Squad (Public Enemy, Ice Cube, Son of Bazerk), Prince Paul (De La Soul) and others, the ra…

  • The End of Song: Improvisation as Social Critique in Brazil

    Open Access•James Mcnally•ARTICLE•twentieth-century music•2021

This article addresses an emerging phenomenon in which Brazilian popular musicians have begun to depart from popular song ( canção popular ) in favour of free improvisation in response to rising authoritarianism. As a case study, I examine the creative project Carta Branca, which brings together popular and experimental musicians from styles such as MPB and hip-hop to perform freely improvised concerts. Following a consideration of the history of…

    James Mcnally•ARTICLE•Ethnomusicology•2020•References: 17

This article discusses the experimental transformation of Afro-Brazilian musical heritage and its implications in the broader African diaspora. As a case study, I examine Juçara Marçal and Cadu Tenório's 2015 album Anganga, which features reinterpretations of traditional Afro-Brazilian songs within an experimental instrumental texture. I argue that the album allows the artists to negotiate the boundaries of the traditional and experimental sphere…

  • Hip-Hop into the Video Age: New York Teenhood, Malcolm McLaren and the British Eye

    James Mcnally•ARTICLE•Visual Culture in Britain•2019

In the 1980s, the popularizing of domestic video technology coincided with a boom in British youth television and music videos of New York hip-hop’s visual world. These provided crucial pre-conditions for hip-hop’s London explosion. This article analyses these historical media shifts, the early evolution of rap’s imagery and testimony from early London hip-hoppers to examine how music video’s dynamic multimedia visuality opened up both hip-hop’s …

  • Favela Chic: Diplo, Funk Carioca , and the Ethics and Aesthetics of the Global Remix

    James Mcnally•ARTICLE•Popular Music & Society•2016•Cited by: 4•References: 13

Using the work of the US DJ and producer Diplo as a case study, this article examines the development, internationalization, and sensationalization of Brazilian funk carioca. It argues that this trend has contributed to glamorized global perceptions of impoverished Latin American communities and perpetuated a troublesome history of Western producers using source material from the Other for novelty and financial gain. It concludes with a discussio…

  • Impacts of Long-term Obesity on the Health Status of Samoan and Tongan Men in the United States: Results from the Pacific Islander Health Study

    Sela V Panapasa, James Mcnally et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnicity & Disease•2015

Overall, the health of Samoan and Tongan males in California is uniformly poor and obesity alone does not significantly increase risks of poor health outcomes. Using a life course perspective, the analysis offers new insights on the basic health of this understudied population

    Sela V Panapasa, James S Jackson et al.•ARTICLE•Progress in community health…•2012•Cited by: 2•References: 1

The study methodology can be replicated for other racial/ethnic groups with high levels of religiosity combined with concentrated levels of residential clustering. Expansion of the Pacific Islander American Health Study (PIA-HS) to include other PI subgroups is encouraged

    Open Access•Lynette F Hoelter, Lynette Hoelter et al.•ARTICLE•Teaching Sociology•2008•Cited by: 2•References: 7

The focus on quantitative literacy has been increasingly outside the realm of mathematics. The social sciences are well suited to including quantitative elements throughout the curriculum but doing so can mean challenges in preparation and presentation of material for instructors and increased anxiety for students. This paper describes tools and resources available through the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) …

  • Poverty Among Elderly Asian Americans in the Twenty-First Century

Voonchin Phua, James Mcnally et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Poverty•2007•Cited by: 8•References: 2

This article examines the risks of poverty among elderly Asians living in the United States. Using data from the 2000 US Census, the analysis examines differences in poverty status by marital status, household structure and nativity. The article, addressing the “model minority” thesis among Asian Americans, shows how it fails to control for heterogeneity within this population. The analysis finds that Asian elders benefit from co-residence, and w…

This paper compares the impacts of health and widowhood on the level of support received by elderly women living in small island communities within the Philippines and Fiji. Using a theoretical perspective of ongoing reciprocal exchange as opposed to altruistic support within household economies, this paper reviews the impacts of disability and economic contributions on the level of support an elderly female receives. It is hypothesized that as t…

Jon Nixon, Bill Cope et al.•ARTICLE•International Studies in…•2000•Cited by: 2•References: 1

The emphasis on 'partnership' in initial teacher education is a matter not just of organisational structure but of professional practices and purposes. If universities are to remain key players in initial teacher education, they must support the occupational group that represents the sector's interests and values: university-based initial teacher educators. Currently, however, this occupational group is awkwardly positioned between competing sets…
