  • The Voice of Wisdom

Open Access•Joann M Montepare, Daniel Kempler et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Language and Social…•2014•Cited by: 1•References: 47

To understand better how age-related physical qualities affect age stereotyping, this research investigated the social judgments young adult listeners make when they hear the voices of younger, middle-aged, and older adult speakers. Ninety-six listeners judged 24 speakers (22-79 years in age) reading a content-neutral passage. Elements of collective identification included in this framework are self-categorization, evaluation, importance, attachment and sense of interdependence, social embeddedness, behavioral involvement, and content and meaning. For each element, the authors …

  • The extended contact effect

Stephen C Wright, Arthur Aron et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•1997•Cited by: 208

The extended contact hypothesis proposes that knowledge that an in-group member has a close relationship with an out-group member can lead to more positive intergroup attitudes. Proposed mechanisms are the in-group or out-group member serving as positive exemplars and the inclusion of the out-group member's group membership in the self. In Studies 1 and 2, respondents knowing an in-group member with an out-group friend had less negative attitudes…
