West Afyonkarahisar (Turkey) Palaeolithic Survey 2022, Field Methods and First Results
Afyonkarahisar is located at the crossroads of almost all main roads in the north-south and east-west directions in the west of Anatolia. This important area has never been subject to Palaeolithic research. In 2022, two separate teams started Palaeolithic surveys in this province. The survey in the western districts was carried out at observation points located every 10 km in the field, thus aiming to identify Palaeolithic sites in Afyonkarahisar…
Late Acheulean Lithic Assemblages From Locality 010 at Gürgürbaba Hill (Eastern Anatolia)
The province of Van in north-eastern Turkey served as a land bridge between Africa and Eurasia during the Palaeolithic. The region is of particular relevance for understanding the movement of hominins between these continents. This study concerns the lithic remains from a locality at Gürgürbaba Hill, named Locality 010, north of the village of Ulupamir (Erciş district). Locality 010 was dated to 311±32 kya by terrestrial cosmogenic nuclides metho…
Two Possible Upper Paleolithic Sites on the Karaburun Peninsula, Turkey
Koskarlı Cave: The first Late Pleistocene/Early Holocene site in the eastern Black Sea region of Turkey
Between Anatolia and the Aegean: Epipalaeolithic and Mesolithic Foragers of the Karaburun Peninsula
The Epipalaeolithic and Mesolithic periods of Turkey are poorly understood. The discovery of two sites (Kocaman and Kayadibi) in the Karaburun Peninsula in coastal western Turkey opens a whole new window into our understanding of these periods in Turkey and beyond by providing the first solid evidence for pre-Neolithic foragers. This article presents typological and technological properties of the lithics from these two open-air sites in terms of…
Contextualizing Karaburun A New Area for Neolithic Research in Anatolia
Recent surveys led by the author in Karaburun Peninsula discovered multiple prehistoric sites. This article introduces one of the Neolithic sites called Kömür Burnu in this marginal zone of coastal western Anatolia. The site offered various advantages to early farmer-herders including freshwater and basalt sources as well as proximity to agricultural lands, forested areas and marine resources. The plain slipped pottery from the site suggests a da…
A Lower Paleolithic assemblage from western Anatolia: The lithics from Bozyer
In 2005 the Central Lydia Archaeological Survey (CLAS) identified an open-air Lower Paleolithic site called Bozyer near Lake Marmara in the province of Manisa, Turkey. Intensive survey of Bozyer in 2008 resulted in collection of over 300 stone tools. Subsequent systematic analysis attributed 189 of these lithics to a Lower Paleolithic industry. The assemblage is characterized by flakes and retouched flake tools, many of which were produced with t…

Palaeolithic occupation of the Anatolian High Plateau during a cold period: An MIS 6 aged artifact from the Avlamış Valley, Eskişehir, NW Turkey
In the Avlamış Valley, 10 km north of Eskişehir (NW Anatolia), an undamaged triangular Levallois flake was encountered in a paleosol, 430 cm beneath the ground surface. The artifact has a minimal dorsal retouch on the right margin, and there is a light beige partial patina on the ventral surface. Based on the technological investigations, this artifact was made using the centripetal recurrent Levallois technique. An observation of the trench wall…
A possible Late Pleistocene forager site from the Karaburun Peninsula, western Turkey
The 'Karaburun Archaeological Survey' project aims to illuminate the lifeways of Late Pleistocene and Early Holocene foragers in western Anatolia. A recently discovered, lithic-rich site on the Karaburun Peninsula offers new insights into a currently undocumented period of western Anatolian prehistory
The Lower Paleolithic in Turkey: Anatolia and Hominin Dispersals Out of Africa
New Palaeolithic and Mesolithic sites in the eastern Aegean: The Karaburun Archaeological Survey Project
Despite ongoing fieldwork focusing on the Palaeolithic and Mesolithic periods of the Aegean, the eastern part of this region, especially western Turkey, remains almost entirely unexplored in terms of early prehistory. There is virtually no evidence from this area that can contribute to broader research themes such as the dispersal of early hominins, the distribution of Early Holocene foragers and early forager-farmer interactions. The primary aim…
Paleolithic occupations of the Göllü Dağ, Central Anatolia, Turkey
Systematic archaeological surface reconnaissance of the Göllü Dağ volcanic complex from 2007 to 2012 documented more than 230 findspots with Paleolithic artifacts, ranging from isolated finds to extensive and dense scatters of artifacts. Most of the activities represented relate to exploitation of the rich obsidian resources in the region. Paleolithic artifacts are attributed mainly to the Middle Paleolithic based on the presence of Levallois tec…

Kaletepe Deresi̇ 3. Orta Anadolu'da Tabakalanma Veren Bi̇r İlk Paleoli̇ti̇k Çağ Yerleşmesi̇
Located in the volcanic area of Central Anatolia, Kaletepe Deresi 3 was discovered in the summer of 2000 and has been excavated until 2006. The site contains one of the most important in situ open-air Paleolithic sequence excavated in Turkey, and the first stratified Paleolithic archaeological record in Central Anatolia. Volcanic activity in the region generated a number of obsidian intrusions which have attracted humans to the area throughout pr…
Installations paléolithiques en Cappadoce. État des connaissances de cinq années de recherche sur les premiers peuplements humains en Anatolie centrale
This paper proposes a synthesis of the excavations of "Kaletepe Deresi 3", an open air Palaeolithic site located in the volvanic region of Central Anatolia (Turkey). The activity of this geological complex generated an important intrusion of obsidian largely used during the prehistoric periode for tool making. The site is located a few kilometers on the eastern slopes of the Göllü Dağ volcano in the proximity of the Kömürcü obsidian intrusions wh…
