Examining the Relationship between Community Residents' Economic Status and the Outcomes of Community Development Programs
In designing and implementing community development interventions the economic status of targeted participants is a demographic characteristic worth considering. Measuring Neighborhood and School Environments Perceptual and Aggregate Approaches
This paper describes scales measuring perceptions of neighborhood and school quality. The scales are short and easy to administer, and easily understood by respondents. The measure of neighborhood quality (the NegNeb) has high reliability (alpha = .81), correlates with census data, shows sensitivity to change in neighborhood quality, and discriminates among urban neighborhoods. Youth and Provider Perspectives on Social Service Providers' Roles in Mental Health Services
In 1994 and 1996, the Youth Services Project interviewed 792 youths from St. Louis City. Although the youths showed a high need for mental health services (20% met diagnostic criteria), less than half of the youths with problems received services. Past contact with a social service provider, but not a teacher, physician, etc., significantly predicted care for mental health problems (odds ratio = 1.5). This study uses structural equation models to describe how objective neighborhood, perceived neighborhood, and environmental support predict mental health; 792 adolescents responded to highly structured interviews.
