  • Cohabitation and the Law

    Monica A Seff•ARTICLE•Marriage & Family Review•1995•Cited by: 6

In the eyes of the law, cohabitation is not the legal equivalent of marriage or common-law marriage. This review ex- amines the extent of heterosexual cohabitation in the United States and judicial responses to issues raised by couples who have chosen nonmarital cohabitation. Issues examined include the effect of non- marital cohabitation on the institution of marriage, contemporary legal considerations in cohabitation, the use of cohabitation co…

  • Injury and Depression

    Open Access•Monica A Seff, Viktor Gecas et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Perspectives•1992•References: 40

This study further specifies the relationship between injury, self-conceptions, and depression. With the use of path analysis, we look at the direct and indirect effects of pain and work limitation associated with a job-related injury on self-efficacy, self-esteem and depression for a sample of injured workers (N = 1,037). As expected, we found that self-efficacy and self-esteem are negatively associated with depression, while work limitation and…

  • Social Class, Occupational Conditions, and Self-Esteem

    Open Access•Viktor Gecas, Monica A Seff•ARTICLE•Sociological Perspectives•1989•Cited by: 19•References: 14

This study is an attempt at further specification of the relationship between social class and self-esteem. We argue that the effects of social class on self-esteem are largely experienced through occupational conditions which affect the self-evaluation dimensions of self-efficacy and self-worth. We examine these relationships, with the use of path analysis, for a sample of working men. The path model considers the direct and indirect effects of …

  • Race, Position Segregation and Salary Equity in Professional Baseball

    Open Access•Earl Smith, Monica A Seff•ARTICLE•Journal of Sport and Social Issues•1989•Cited by: 6•References: 14

This paper uses the most recent data available to analyze the question of position segregation in major league baseball. One of the most consistent beliefs in our popular culture is that in professional sport black Americans have achieved parity with their white counterparts. Surprisingly, given the pervasiveness of this belief, there are relatively few empirical attempts to examine and explain the degree to which parity has or has not been achie…
