Populism and Identity Politics in the U.S. Heartland
The rise of populism on the political right in the U.S. and Europe in recent decades reflects a significant shift in political culture. This populism has been associated with the rejection of mainstream politics and increased hostility toward immigrants, racialized minorities, and other marginalized groups who are seen as threats to economic security and hegemonic social identities. In the U.S. Heartland, several key states flipped from Democrat …

Shakespeare's Plays of Deranged Authority
Shakespeare's plays are situated upon the threshold of two worlds: a declining traditional order torn apart by political rivalry and ascendant early-modern capitalism. The history plays dramatize infighting among warring factions of privileged aristocrats as well as revolutionary forces propelled by the rising commons and the politics of commodity. Legitimate authority is rarely secure among the kings perched upon Shakespearean thrones. In Shakes…

Political Moderation and Polarization in the Heartland
The 2016 U.S. presidential election was a watershed event that signaled decreasing political moderation and increasing partisan polarization, authoritarianism, and ethno-nationalism. Iowa, located at the center of the American Heartland, swung to the political right more than any other state. Multivariate regression analysis of county-level data is used to determine the relative contribution of factors reputed to have caused voters to support Tru…
Peasantry
“The peasantry” defines a class of agrarian laborers who live upon the very land they work. Toiling with hoe and plow, peasants have remained a constant of human societies since the Neolithic revolution. Social theorists have viewed the peasantry from diverse positions. Marx viewed the peasantry as a mass of agrarian households who toiled to produce use‐values for their own consumption without labor specialization, scientific agriculture, or soci…
The Social Ontology of Capitalism

Trophies of Surplus Enjoyment
Megaspectacles are theorized as markets for a special economic object: trophies of surplus enjoyment. Attendees at megaspectacles were found to focus their activity upon trophy markets, trophy hunting and anticipated trophy display rather than spontaneous enjoyment of the staged event. Veblen's theory of trophies as invidious objects, and insights from Goffman, Lacan and Žižek, are used to explain these counterintuitive findings. Trophies functio…
The Commodification of Spectacle
This article conceptualizes economies of spectatorship through a case study of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally (SMR). Economies of spectatorship produce spectacular diegeses as commodities sold to spectators and sponsors. They develop through a dialectical process of progressive decontextualization as their diegeses are cross-marketed with discrepant products and services to reach new markets. Progressive decontextualization leads to diegetic incohe…

Critical Theory and the Limits of Academic Economics
This essay assesses the central arguments of Piketty's Capital in the Twenty-First Century. We note Piketty's limited engagement with and active distancing from the writings of Marx. Piketty's location within the disciplinary boundaries of academic economics seems to have profoundly shaped his surprisingly apolitical analysis. Engagement with the political dimensions of capital is further constrained to increase the book's influence upon policy. …
