Migrants as sustainability actors: Contrasting nation, city and migrant discourses and actions
Migrants are sustainability actors in their urban destinations. • Sustainability policy overlook the transformative role of migrants. • Technocratic and assimilationist notions dominate sustainability policy discourse. • Sustainability policy should embrace migration and plurality. Although it is widely recognized that migration is socially transformative, the potential contributions of migrants to transformations towards sustainability in their …
At home in the field, in the field at home? Reflections on power and fieldwork in familiar settings
Critical epistemologies and methodologies have over time challenged the static and mono-dimensional approaches to fieldwork, allowing researchers to contemplate and conduct their research in spaces of in-betweenness. Despite this important shift, the essentialist idea that both 'the field' and 'home' in a fieldwork setting must be actual places persists. Performers such as Alsarah and Rasha have access to a world music stage to comment upon gender and racial hierarchies, chide Sudanese power brokers about their transgressions, and encourage a more inclusive and just society. Pushback against new voices have included charges in the public domain (e.g. Yo…
Witnessing and Disrupting: The Ethics of Working with Testimony for Refugee Advocacy
Testimonies of refugees and other forced migrants have helped stimulate and shape social change, and have on occasion been an effective tool for policy change and social transformation. But while advocacy on behalf of forcibly displaced people often demonstrates the best of intentions, many human rights advocates grapple unsuccessfully with the power differentials at all stages of the process. Using techniques derived from drama and experiential …
Mobilizing Home for Long-Term Displacement: A Critical Reflection on the Durable Solutions
With long term displacement becoming the ‘new normal’, the three ‘durable solutions’ of local integration, resettlement and return, are increasingly unsuitable for offering social, economic and cultural means for refugees to rebuild their lives and livelihoods. This article retreads some common observations and critiques of the durable solutions, while attempting to find a new vocabulary to help address the conundrum of a refugee protection model…
Managing Muslim Mobilities
Fábos and Isotalo address the issue of forced migration and mobility in the Muslim world. Their work explores the tensions between Muslim religious conceptions of space and place and new policies of '
Managing Muslim Mobilities: Between Spiritual Geographies and the Global Security Regime
Introduction: Managing Muslim Mobilities—A Conceptual Framework
This edited collection explores the intersections between Muslim religious conceptions of space and place, increasing insecurity and mobility for millions of Muslims related to conflict and forced displacement, and the discourse of "migration management" in a range of contexts across the Muslim region—defined both territorially and spiritually. The book addresses a number of conceptual tensions and shifts in migration and forced migration policie…
