  • Max Weber's sociology of law, then and now

    F J Lechner•CHAPTER•Routledge International Handbook…•2022

Interpreting Max Weber’s sociology of law in historical context and as part of present scholarship, this chapter describes it as a somewhat successful intervention in debates of Weber’s time, a still-significant contribution to the study of rationalization, and a contested analysis of law exposed to criticism in recent decades, reinforcing the need to rethink current uses of classic texts.

  • How Is Society Possible

    Open Access•F J Lechner•ARTICLE•Simmel Studies•2022

This paper questions the adequacy of Georg Simmel’s answer to the question, how is society possible? Treating his essay on the question as a contribution to his overall sociology, it argues that the “a prioris” he identifies add little to the general understanding of social forms, are neither necessary nor sufficient to make society possible as a coherent mental construct, and play at best a modest role in Simmel’s own analysis of forms. Taking a…

    Open Access•F J Lechner•ARTICLE•Journal of Classical Sociology•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 17

Using illustrative passages and comparisons with previous partial translations, this paper reports some problems of accuracy and tone in the complete English translation of Georg Simmel's sociological magnum opus, Sociology: Inquiries into the Construction of Social Forms. Placing these problems in the context of broader discussions of translation projects, it urges caution on the part of anglophone readers and suggests that some older translatio…

  • Economy and Society: A New Translation by Max Weber Keith Tribe (review)

Book Reviews 275© Max Weber Studies 2019. the use of which can therefore serve as a basis for asserting intellectual dependence. Wagner’s approach is decidedly original; but many readers will not, I fear, find in the introduction and other editorial material sufficient treatment of what they will, quite reasonably, be looking for. This book virtually closes the majestic procession of volumes that constitutes the Max Weber Gesamtausgabe. We should…

  • Versions of Vocation: Max Weber's 'Wissenschaft als Beruf' in Translation

    F J Lechner•ARTICLE•Max Weber Studies•2018

Expanding on prior discussion of the perils in translating the work of Max Weber, this paper compares five English versions of ‘Science as a Vocation’ (‘Wissenschaft als Beruf’) to show that none achieves maximum fidelity. The contrasting versions reflect divergent translation strategies that make the anglicized Weber a protean figure whose voice and meaning come through unevenly. The comparison points to a need for broader scholarly attention to…

  • Sport and the Nation in the Global Age 1

    F J Lechner•CHAPTER•Routledge Handbook of the…•2015

In the global age, nations remain actors on courts and fields. Using sport for national self-definition became the global thing to do. International competitions, as noted, helped to reinforce that norm. Early-modern nation-building did more than give cultural backing to emerging states: it also made the nation the norm. The status of ‘national’ games is not fixed in any case, showing that the nation is not a uniform, and uniformly important, con…

This article uses evidence drawn from Dutch policy arenas to challenge claims about the erosion of national identity due to globalization. More specifically, it complements and revises neoinstitutionalist arguments about the enactment of world culture within nation-states by showing how the redefinition of national identity takes the form of reflexive discourse, varies across sectors and over time, and entwines local with global pressures. • Imagined communities in the global game: Soccer and the development of Dutch national identity

    Open Access•F J Lechner•ARTICLE•Global Networks•2007•Cited by: 7•References: 8

Using the recent history of Dutch soccer as an illustrative case, this article supports a line of argument in globalization studies that generally focuses on the variable reverberations of globalization and more specifically suggests that globalization entails the embattled redefinition of national identities. I show how the involvement of the Dutch national team in global competition aided the construction of a myth of national football distinct…

  • Parsons on citizenship

    F J Lechner•ARTICLE•Citizenship Studies•1998•Cited by: 3•References: 10

In Parsons's analysis of citizenship, his general theory, liberal views, and assessment of American society intersect. Drawing from these distinctive sources, Parsons addresses questions still central to the study of citizenship. While Parsons presents a strong case for inclusion by means of liberal citizenship as an integrative force in modern societies, his treatment of inclusion is also limited in several respects. For example, Parsons elabora…

  • Rejoinder to Stark and Iannaccone: "Heads, I Win…": On Immunizing a Theory

    F J Lechner•ARTICLE•Journal for the Scientific Study…•1996

in their original article on the secularization of Europe, Stark and Iannaccone proposed that in times past Europe had not been all that religious, that no European nation is today (1994: 231), and that will take a much shorter time to church Europe than it took to church the United States (249). They now sensibly concede that at least in the recent past one European society had been heavily churched, acknowledge that religious participation ther…

  • Secularization in the Netherlands

    F J Lechner•ARTICLE•Journal for the Scientific Study…•1996•Cited by: 14

This paper refutes Stark and Iannaccone's recent argument about secularization in Europe as applied to the Netherlands. Relevant Dutch evidence shows that both organized religion and subjective religiosity have declined in the Netherlands since the 1950s. Any deregulation and increases in pluralism that occurred in that period did not have the theoretically expected effects. The anomalous Dutch case casts further doubt on the explanatory power of…
