Toward Making Power More Explicit in the Iadf
In commons and institutional research, the Institutional Analysis and Development framework (IADF) has proven itself as a useful tool to investigate the complexities of social-environmental systems. It is effective in guiding researchers through the process of understanding complex problem situations. The framework helps to conceptually unravel the institutional scaffoldings structuring human-nature interactions. Yet, a long-standing critique of …
Complexity at the Fringe
The peripheries of cities in Australia are witnessing dynamic socio-spatial changes driven by infrastructure growth and land-use changes. This study investigates how land-use changes and housing developments near legacy industries in a recently established outer suburb of Melbourne lead to land-use conflicts and emerging air quality concerns, such as dust, odour, and noise. Employing a mixed-methods approach that combines spatial analysis with st…
Rethinking waste and waste management practices
In India, waste as a category in governance discourse is getting stabilized as a techno-managerial problem. This new and dominant discourse frames the solution by converting waste into resources universally applicable across urban contexts. However, in practice, this results in converting waste as materials to be disposed of. Underlying this disposability discourse is, paradoxically, a neoliberal logic of efficiency that eclipses social and polit…
Air Pollution in India

This commentary argues that air pollution in Indian cities is the structural outcome of speculative metropolitan expansion. Drawing on remote-sensing evidence from the Hyderabad Metropolitan Region, we show how the state’s pursuit of real-estate driven growt…

Justice and sanitation governance
The Swachh Bharat Mission-Rural (SBM-R) is a flagship programme aimed at ending open defecation in rural India. In this paper, we study institutions and processes using Amartya Sen's conception of justice. We review the outcomes by assessing agencies, actions and processes involved in the implementation of the SBM-R programme. The findings are analysed using the Sanitation Well-being Framework. Sanitation well-being is achieved when an individual…

Understanding the Relationship Between Sustainability and Ecofeminism in an Indian Context
This article looks closely at the relationship between gender and environment in the context of sustainability. It has been seen that without the inclusion of feminist concerns for gender equality, most environment public policy approaches will be incomplete and may even threaten to intensify women’s subordination. This is illustrated in this article through a case study from Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu, India, wherein local organizations tha…
Decentralised and Effective Forest Resource Governance in India
Within the context of decentralised environmental governance, this article seeks to answer the question which institutional arrangements may be most effective in delivering the promise of better community-centred forest governance. The specific objective is to analyse the impact that decentralisation of resource management has on the effectiveness of forest governance. Using a comparative case study framework, the article finds that decentralisat…
Governing the Resource
The Indian Forest Policy of 1988 and the subsequent government resolution on participatory forest management emphasized the need for people’s participation in natural forest management. This article lays out the institutions that emerge from this strategy and their involvement in decentralized Forest Resource Management. It also traces the inter-linkages between them in the governance of the forest resource in the Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu.…
