  • African IQ and Mental Retardation

    Open Access•Léon J Kamin•ARTICLE•South African Journal of Psychology•2006•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 15

Rushton and Jensen (2005), in an extensive review of racial differences in intelligence test scores, assert that some part of the difference between blacks and whites in mean intelligence (IQ) scores is genetic in origin. They cite earlier reviews by Lynn (1991) and by Lynn and Vanhanen (2002), as well as several more recent studies, which are said to indicate that the mean IQ of sub-Saharan black Africans is about 70 - at the borderline of menta…

  • Race, Head Size, and Intelligence

    Open Access•Léon J Kamin, Safiya Omari•ARTICLE•South African Journal of Psychology•1998•Referencias: 21

We review recent research which estimates racial differences in cranial capacity by measuring head dimensions of living persons. We describe errors in published reports, and find that American whites have greater head height than American blacks, but that blacks have greater head length and greater head circumference. Estimates of cranial capacity are determined by racial differences in head shape. Possible relations between head size and measure…

  • Two Effects of An “Anxiety-Eliciting” CS on Human Reaction Latency

    Open Access•ANN MARIE GOERK, Léon J Kamin•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1959

When a neutral stimulus (CS) has been paired with shock (US), the CS may be said, alternatively, to acquire aversive properties, or to elicit conditioned anxiety which is reduced by CS-termination. Whichever language is employed, CS-termination is now held to reinforce responses which precede it in time. This effect has been amply demonstrated in animals (cf. 1, 4, 5), and has been cited in the interpretation of avoidance learning (cf. 6, 7). Tha…

  • CS-Termination as a Factor in the Emergence of Anticipatory Avoidance

    Open Access•Léon J Kamin•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1959

The role of response termination of the CS in the reinforcement of shuttlebox avoidance responding is well established (Mowrer & Lamoreaux, 1942; Kamin, 1957b). Previous study of this effect suggested the incidental finding (Kamin, 1957a) that delay of CS-termination on the initial escape trials retarded the of avoidance responding. The running response, though instrumental in terminating the US, did not readily become anticipatory unless, on esc…

  • Traumatic avoidance learning

    Richard L Solomon, Léon J Kamin et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Abnormal & Social…•1953•Citada por: 5

HE persistence of behavior with no obvious reinforcement poses special problems for theories of learning. But numerous experimental studies confirm the clinical observation that traumatically acquired habits maintain a marked resistance to extinction despite the lack of renewed primary reinforcement (3, 4, 6, 8). The generality of the problem has been indicated by Mowrer(9), who formulates as the central problem of neurosis the paradoxical perpet…
