Pelastaako kulttuuriperintö maailman? Painavia ajatuksia aineettomasta kulttuuriperinnöstä ja kestävästä kehityksestä
Kansanmusiikin paikka
The article discusses the Pelimannitalo in Kaustinen, an Ostrobothnian farmhouse that was moved from Veteli to the centre of Kaustinen in 1974. Built in the early 19th century and known as Aapintupa, the house was previously used as a residential building, although it was rebuilt in Kaustinen as a concert and event venue, which is how it continues to function today. The article analyses the heritage process of Pelimannitalo, the experiences assoc…
Vibing to the furthest past
In this article, we examine the prehistory exhibition at the National Museum of Finland. The exhibition opened to the public in 2017, closed in 2023, and will reopen in 2027. The analysis is based on an examination of the exhibition texts and the immersive, multisensory elements incorporated into the exhibition. We argue that the representation of folklore and mythology in the exhibition is somewhat vague, merely serving to reimagine and embellis…
The spiritual forest
This article discusses the Finnish forest yoga phenomenon, which incorporates contemporary spiritual discourses on nature, landscape, ‘the self’ and gender. We scrutinise ethnographic fieldwork materials, autoethnographic writings and other materials related to forest yoga. By using the methods of collaborative ethnography, we assert that forest yoga practices partially question and fragment, and partially reconstruct, previous forest-related dis…
The Alluring Past
During the nineteenth century, the tradition of metered oral poetry, often referred to as 'Kalevalaic' poetry or runo singing, became a fundamental and emblematic part of Finnish cultural heritage. The collections of metered poetry include hundreds of poems that discuss sexual relationships, the female body, and genitals. This article analyses the re-heritagisations of such poems in contemporary Finland. Through an examination of ethnographic int…

Kalevalamittaiset runot on 1800-luvulta alkaen sijoitettu ”suomalaisen kulttuuriperinnön” symboliseen keskiöön. Tätä näkemystä on tuettu esimerkiksi keruun, arkistoinnin, tutkimuksen ja taiteellisen toiminnan käytännöin. Tässä artikkelissa tarkastellaan seksuaalisuuteen ja ruumiillisuuteen liittyviä kalevalamittaisia runoja, joita on ajallisesta kontekstista riippuen joko suljettu pois kansallisesta kulttuuriperinnöstä tai sisällytetty siihen kan…

Digesting the Finnish Nature and Past
This article examines the inventorying of Finnish intangible cultural heritage with regard to UNESCO’s Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. I analyse the participatory Wiki-inventory for Living Heritage , concentrating on entries that discuss food and foodways to study how food, materiality, and the national intertwine with practices of producing intangible cultural heritage. The article’s theoretical background dr…

Folkl…

Silencing the Other’s Voice
Kalevalaic runosinging is a Baltic-Finnic tradition of metered oral poetry. In Finland, runo singing and the national epic Kalevala based on this tradition are often seen − especially in public speech − as nationally significant symbols of Finnishness. In this article, I examine how the idea of the Finnishness of traditional runo songs has been constructed in the changing paradigms of studying and performing folk music and oral poetry in Finland …
The Kalevala' s Languages
In Finland, the epic Kalevala (1835, 1849) and Kalevala-meter poetry, or oral folk poetry more generally, are often seen as nationally significant symbols of Finnishness. The Kalevala is a modern literary product constructed by Elias Lönnrot out of Finnic folk poetry especially from Russian Karelia, Finland, and Ingria. Lönnrot, who was himself among the most significant collectors of oral poetry, created the Kalevala as a synthetic, organized co…
