  • Connections to the Pompeii water supply network

    Open Access•Elena H Sánchez López•ARTICLE•Oxford Journal of Archaeology•2024•References: 14

Analyses of the urban distribution of the water supplied from aqueducts have generally focused on those elements directly referred to by Vitruvius ( De Arch . 8.6.2): fountains, baths and houses. However, excavations in Pompeii, which has one of the best‐preserved water supply networks from antiquity, have revealed that other places also benefited from these connections, including those with an artisanal or commercial purpose. This paper compiles…

  • An Experiment Measuring Water Consumption in Roman Hydrophobic Mortar ( opus signinum)

Open Access•Javier Martínez Jiménez, Juan Jesús Padilla Fernández et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Archaeology•2024•References: 1

Opus signinum is a lime mortar mix that includes crushed pottery as an aggregate. Because it is water-resistant, it was used to line hydraulic structures like pools and aqueducts. While there have been numerous recreations of Roman ‘concretes’ in the past, hydrophobic linings have received little attention, and all preliminary studies in these recreations have paid more attention to the dry components and the lime than to the hydric needs of the …

  • Water and production reflections on the water supply to urban workshops in roman times

    Open Access•Elena H Sánchez López•ARTICLE•Water History•2023•References: 10

Research into water management in Roman towns has traditionally focused on its supply by means of aqueducts and its use in the thermal baths and domus of the elites. However, the urban functions of water included uses that went far beyond recreational, social activities and also included its supply to production facilities. Numerous artisanal activities required large amounts of water, including pottery, textile activities, wickerwork and manufac…

  • Clay, Fire, Air, and Mostly Water

Open Access•Juan Jesús Padilla Fernández, Elena H Sánchez López•ARTICLE•Ethnoarchaeology•2021

Archaeological studies of pottery production have given little attention to the productive uses of water, building historical discourses without taking into consideration its crucial role in many chaînes opératoires. Structures related to the use of water in pottery-making, such as wells, cisterns, or settling ponds, are very rarely discussed. This article aims to remedy that situation by contributing archaeological, ethnoarchaeological, and expe…

A better understanding of villae and other forms of rural settlement has enriched the study of ancient rural landscapes. These agricultural installations are, in many cases, the only visible archaeological records of a lost reality of the Roman agrarian landscape: the fundi. In this paper, we propose a methodology to identify Roman cadasters, using the qualitative and quantitative variables that villae offer: viewshed, topographic prominence, chr…

  • Urbanizar en época romana

Open Access•Margarita Orfila Pons, Esther Chávez‐álvarez et al.•ARTICLE•SPAL Revista de Prehistoria y…•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 3

In Roman times, the orientation given to the buildings usually had symbolic meanings, reflection of a ritual, especially in the case of cities or sanctuaries, although the orientation could also simply respond to practical issues. In any case, the gods’ support was essential for the beginning of the works, and the drawing of the design on the ground. Besides the topic of the meaning of the orientations, another question arises: what was the proce…

The excavations developed by Manuel Sotomayor in 1972 in El Majuelo (Almuñécar, Granada), allowed to confirm the existence in the Western urban sector of a Roman wide salted-fish factory. We offer here a review of the principal results obtain…
