    Open Access•Evelien Geerts, Delphi Carstens•ARTICLE•Somatechnics•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 12

Our current era of crisis and neo-fascist revanches (see Lawtoo 2019 ) is rife with desires-driven mimesis, and more specifically, mimetic resentment or conflictual copycat behaviour. Traditionally conceptualised in relation to ressentiment, mimetic resentment (see Nietzsche [1887]2006; Girard [1961]1965 , [1977]1992 , and [1978]1987) is seldom analysed as a somatechnical phenomenon that meshes the corporeal and the technological ( Sullivan 2005 …

  • An octo-aesthetic figuration for learning in times of crisis

    Open Access•Delphi Carstens•ARTICLE•Critical Studies in Teaching and…•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 2

This theoretical paper mobilises a multi-modal figuration - octo-aesthetics - to argue for a transversal approach to HE (higher education) pedagogies appropriate to times of uncertainty. Using the eight independently thinking arms of the octopus as a guide, I deploy eight interrelated conceptual thinking aids to outline the relevance of an ethico-aesthetic paradigm to HE in times of individual, social, and environmental crisis. Deployed as specul…

  • Ecological aesthesis: Figurations of the Animal Spirit in Contemporary Science, Philosophy and Literature

    Delphi Carstens•ARTICLE•Religion•2023•References: 16

Deborah Bird Rose uses the Aboriginal Yol’ngu term bir’yun – shimmer – to describe the inherent capacity to experience nature’s ancestral and ongoing power (2022). Using Rose’s concept as a leitmotif, this article investigates contemporary figurations of the animal spirit as it moves through the margins of contemporary science, philosophy, and literature. Using becoming figurations like sympoiesis, Gaia, the holobiont, and the Body without Organs…

  • Understanding Displacement, (Forced) Migration and Historical Trauma: The Contribution of Feminist New Materialism

Delphi Carstens, Vivienne Bozalek•ARTICLE•Ethics and Social Welfare•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 4

Feminist new materialist theory has taken up the challenge of reconfiguring politics, ethics and justice in ways that critically account for contemporary forms of materiality, affect and embodiment at work in the contemporary world. There is much at stake in such a project. The crisis of displacement, we argue, is the crisis of capitalism as it impacts on the biosphere of planet earth, necessitating an approach that can account for all the proces…

  • Toward a Speculative Pedagogy

    Open Access•Delphi Carstens•ARTICLE•Critical Studies in Teaching and…•2020•Cited by: 4•References: 2

In opening itself to the equivocal nature of materiality a speculative pedagogy might succeed in generating hopes for more liveable futures. The kinds of endeavours that times of uncertainty call for are by no means straightforward, calling, as I argue along with Elizabeth de Freitas (2020) writing in this volume, for a trickster modality and a bewildering pedagogy. The Anthropocene or Capitalocene are terms that capture the slippery nature of th…

  • Navigating Apocalyptic Affects: Generating Posthuman Cartographies of Resistance to Capitalist Realism

    Open Access•Delphi Carstens•ARTICLE•Somatechnics•2020•Cited by: 3•References: 1

Humans find themselves inhabiting an uncanny milieu of accelerated cultural transition, uncertainty, and geopolitical crisis. The transformation of human and nonhuman worlds in the wake of technological progress narratives have raised troubling ontological spectres. ‘How’, for instance, ‘do we conceive of being when the distinction between organic and machinic dissolves, when reality is folded into virtuality, [when] the body is morphed by techno…

  • Cultivating a dark haecceity: A pedagogy of the uncanny and dark transports

    Delphi Carstens•ARTICLE•Parallax•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 3

In her recent work, Donna Haraway opines: ‘staying with the trouble requires learning to be truly present’.1 This paper seeks to address troubling notions of presence in the context of Anthropocene

  • Protocols for experiments in African science fiction

    Delphi Carstens, Mer Roberts•ARTICLE•Scrutiny2•2009•Cited by: 3•References: 6

Africa is rich in migratory mythology that ties in with contemporary cyborg narratives, drawing strongly on motifs of transformation, hybridity, gender-blending and extra-sensory perception and offering viable alternatives to destructive techno-capitalism. In addition, it abounds with mysterious mythology, redolent in warped time-frames and twisted metaphors that are essentially science-fictional. This article will investigate the relevance of Af…
