A Splendid Anachronism
Taking the balegole, the shtetl coachman or urban cabby, as its point of departure, this essay explores the representation of speech in the work of the Singer family of writers. Like the balegole, however, some of these dramatized speech scenarios—one Jew talking to his horse or talking Torah to himself—were already an ethnographic relic, or “a splendid anachronism,” in the words of Aaron Zeitlin, by the time the Singer siblings came of age. The …
The Harps that Once…
The eminent Assyriologist Thorkild Jacobsen, author of Treasures of Darkness , here presents translations of ancient Sumerian poems written near the end of the third millennium b.c.e., including a number of compositions that have never before been published in translation. The themes developed in the poems—quite possibly the earliest poems extant—are those that have fascinated humanity since the time people first began to spin stories: the longin…
Call It Jewspeak
This essay seeks to demonstrate how the spoken language became a central feature of modern Yiddish literature. This vocal strain was used at first to replace otherworldly with enlightened discourse, esoteric book culture with colloquial style, hackneyed phraseology with straight talk, and Hasidic speech with parody. Not until 1864-66, however, did the new orality enter its second phase, when the Hebrew writer Shalom-Yankev Abramovitsh fashioned a…
Major Trends in Yiddish Parody
Yiddish parody was ubiquitous and inescapable. It marked the fault lines of Jewish modernity-the tortuous path of Jewish emancipation and counteremancipation, whether in Poland or across the ocean in North America. It marked both ends of the cultural spectrum-demotic and highbrow-and through its promiscuity, it targeted those aspects of Jewish culture that were most untouchable, sacred, secret. The scholar Dan Miron modeled, as a scholar and teac…

The Jewish Search for a Usable Past
Roskies (Jewish Theol. Seminary) shows that the Jewish present is not evolving as a simple continuation of the past nor, contrary to what is often claimed, is it emerging from a radical break with the past. It sits, rather, upon what Roskies calls memory sites, images of the past recreated from the ashes of destruction and the potentially debilitating sense of Jewish loss these catastrophes create. How are such memory sites created? Roskies illus…

Sholem Aleichem
What could be more obvious for a writer who called himself How–Do– You–Do than to place folklore and folk–speech at the center of his work? After all, it was his childhood friend Shmulik who had inducted him into the world of storytelling; ever since then, the celebrated author could have mined the treasures of Jewish myth and legend as his natural legacy. But Shmulik′s formative role in From the Fair was as much a fiction as the name Sholem Alei…
